I just graduated last month, and since then Im having a hell of a time finding a job.

I live in an area with a ton of Secret Spook shit, and having let my Security Clearance lapse means im not qualified for jobs im qualified for.

In the meantime, a guy called me from a local arcade, and he saw my resume and wants to hire me as a Shift Manager.

The pay suuuucks (I made more at Nintendo), but the hours are super flexible, and at this point I feel like I need any job just to be working.

But will taking this job hurt me? Will a future employer see he took a shitty job at arcade and want to pay me less?

Take the job and keep looking for work. You don't have to put it on your resume

It looks much worse to have significant gaps in your employment history, so it's certainly better than that

a resum is for relevant experience, not every job you've held. resum is not a background check.

I'd take the job and leave it off the resume unless you end up otherwise unemployed for longer than 6 months.

Small blank > filler job > big blank

No, and he doesn't have to include it if he gets a better job in the next, say, six months

But if he doesn't then he probably does since while it's not a "background check," they absolutely do look at things such as gaps between employment.

EDIT: If it takes him 9 months to find a job and he doesn't put anything down, they're going to ask what he did for those 9 months and form opinions

The ability to hold down a job is relevant experience anywhere so yeah if you've got a huge gap it's going to beat a blank just for that even if it isn't strictly speaking relevant.

Actually, you have to put your current employer on your resum, regardless of how the skills translate. Prospective employers want to know that you're working. Not listing a current employer equates to having no job at all. Once that's no longer your current job, you can take it off your resum.

That said, take the job. You can find creative ways to translate your skills and get a reference out of the deal. Retail jobs tend to be transient - often times, people will work in one spot for six months, if that. It's fine.

I think Ill at least take the interview and see how it goes, it might be fun.

To give you an idea of the kind of job it probably is, the guy called me dude while asking if I wanted to setup an interview.

It's definitely worth it since there's no real chance of it hurting you

If it's asked about because it's your current job at the time, you can BS some reason for how it gives you experience in something applicable, and say it's a position you are holding while in search of more fulfilling employment

at least the position of shift manager is somewhat respectable. I'd take it if I were you.

Oh, yeah, I don't disagree with that at all, Steiner

I probably misunderstood the initial post

i mean, i didn't make that point initially which is why i went on to delete the post. what i mean to say is that yes, i fully agree with you that if he's there for more than 6 months it starts to look bad to leave it off, but it sounded like that was not really tony's intention, with an implication that if things were so bad he did need to have this job for more than 6 months, not taking it would have bigger negatives than the impact on his resum

Fair enough

I moreso brought up the impact on resum because that appeared to be what his question was mostly about, impact on future hiring worth

Jokes on me, after looking into it, the amount I'd pay in childcare would be like 60% of my weekly gross.
