The four days in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center saw NXT draw 10,300 fans on 8/19, SummerSlam on 8/20 was the lone sellout, with about 13,200 fans, Raw did 12,100 on 8/21 and Smackdown did 11,500 on 8/22. The Smackdown crowd was well up from what they would have gotten anywhere else. But it was different from the previous two years when they did three nights, and all three nights sold out in advance. Part of the difference is that scalpers took a bath on last years NXT show, so the only show they heavily bought was SummerSlam, which was the one that had the most interest."
In other words, a sellout at Barclay's is about 13,000 - 13,500 fans when accounting WWE's usual stage setup. MSG at ROH/NJPW sold a little over 15,000 tickets in only THREE DAYS. In other words, ROH/NJPW is outdrawing NXT: Takeover Brooklyn 5 on the same night and also outdrawing this year's Takeover Brooklyn 4, Summerslam, RAW and Smackdown. And as far as MSG is concerned: "The most recent WWE show at the Garden, on 7/7, built around Ronda Rouseys debut in the building and Undertakers first match in MSG in eight years, drew only 13,000 fans." The only explanation is that New Japan and ROH have stolen the NYC market place due to the quality of their shows and booking, while WWE, built around part timers and Roman Reigns, has killed all interest in their product. --- ... WrestleMania XX is still the highest grossing show, but this is now number two - The Ring of Honor/New Japan Pro Wrestling show on 4/6 in Madison Square Garden sold out on 8/10 less than 19 minutes after the public on-sale began. Of course, they had already sold 12,000 of the 15,000 seats put on sale, with the first 9,000 going to Honor Club subscribers on 8/8, and another 3,000 going to those with codes that werent hard to get, and in fact were tweeted out. The significance of this could be monumental in ways that are obvious and other ways perhaps less obvious. While ROH officials would not release a gate number, it was confirmed to be well in excess of $1 million, making it the largest gate for a non-WWE pro wrestling gate not only in the United States, but likely anywhere in the world except for the Far East. The previous largest gate for a non-WWE show in North America was $1 million, set on September 11, 2014, for the Atlantis vs. Ultimo Guerrero mask vs. mask mach at Arena Mexico. The largest ever in the United States was $930,735 set on January 4, 1999, for an episode of Nitro at the Georgia Dome. The Hulk Hogan vs. Bill Goldberg gate at the Georgia Dome months earlier was $906,330. It is possible this would be the second largest gate ever for a pro wrestling show in Madison Square Garden for wrestling, trailing WrestleMania 20 that did $2,401,000. It was the fastest sellout since WrestleMania 20 in Madison Square Garden, and second fastest of all-time. It sold out farther in advance than any pro wrestling event at the Garden. And it was the first Madison Square Garden sellout for pro wrestling since 2015. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

While I agree that this weekend may be a loss the whole area/state isn't lost. How many shows does WWE put on in the area in a year? Few dozen? NXT isn't broadcasted on TV anywhere.
Same with 205 Live! That's a fundamental problem. It needs to be on a Cable channel or National TV channel somewhere. The fact that SmackDown is going onto Fox this coming fall October 4, 2019 and will move back to Friday night is big deal for them. WWE also has much safer and more conservative matches (outside of major shows) due to that insane number of shows put on, and the fact that NJPW/ROH do fewer shows a year is part of why their in-ring product is better than WWE. If a company tried to run a WWE type of schedule with NJPW/ROH style matches and not tone them down, their wrestlers could end up severely injured, maybe some of them dead with all the neck bumps they take. Look at how much of a physical toll the G1 Climax tournament takes on the NJPW roster, and that's only over a period of three weeks, not many months. --- "Someday I too will fly... and find you again!" https://imgur.com/kuErCec ... I haven't watched Raw or Smackdown in months. Not sure if I can even consider myself a "pro wrestling" fan anymore. NXT is great but as soon as they guys (and gals) gain any popularity they get sent to the main roster and get buried in obscurity. The average WWE fan has no idea who is in NXT and what they're capable of.
As for ROH/NJ, it's a too little hardcore and niche for my liking. --- It's what's best for business. ... Copied to Clipboard!
