there's literally thousands. they do a huge parade/photoshoot in the hotel and you literally cant get anywhere while it's happening. i dont have a suit but ive worn other people's. it's exhausting and you get overheated and sweaty, but it's fun to be a character and have everyone go "oh cute buppy :3"

in my experience most people who study japanese are like, super furries

by japanese prof I mean my prof in japan for otaku culture class... he makes animegao and is heavily involved in that kind of scene and has even hosted get-togethers at the university campus for kigurumi wearers including fursuiters

maybe! there's a lot of people who i know went to both but i never even came close to seeing during either. everyone is so busy and scattered all over the hotel. at 2018 there were parts of the hotel open that i didnt even know were available until the end of the con, and there were a lot of artist friends hanging out at them that i didnt get to meet...

What did you dress up as?

i usually didnt dress up as anything. most people just wear their comfiest outfits, or dress up super fashionably. for a lot of people this is the only chance they have to pull out their "furry clothes", since a lot of vendors sell shirts and gear that are SUPER obviously furry and would just be embarrassing to wear in public unless you're in Seattle. i did have a cardboard cathead I wore sometimes though.

someone who participates in the furry community. anyone who enjoys content made by furries and interacts positively with it in some way. i would say you don't even need a fursona, but everyone ends up getting one because it's just such a solid representation of who you are, what you like, what you want to present yourself as. a lot of people use it to explore gender and sexual identity as well.

i have a friend who sat next to a notoriously gross/idiot furry during a con panel, and he reported that he smelled like barbecue sauce. there are a lot of big stinkers, but for the most part people smell okay.

i think going as a normie who is unaffiliated would be a lot more fun. no one parties like furries do. the amount of drugs and alcohol is insane. i was eating in a diner at 4 am and got a message saying a huge party just started.

once you get involved in the politics of how furry circles run, though, it becomes just exhausting. everyone hates each other for very silly, minor reasons. and not to delve into political discourse, but everyone is a different level of the leftist political spectrum, so even if you agree on 99% of everything, that 1% difference will tear your relationship apart.

Is it just an excuse to get furries together? Are there panels or things of the sort?

there are panels at these cons and I have hosted sevaral over the years at furcon and califur (both in california) discussing dragons and other mythical animals

There are panels that run all day, every day, until about midnight. A lot of people go to them. But most people use it as an excuse to party, fursuit, hook up with like-minded others, be generally queer and open. Some people do really treat it like an anime con, though, and go to specific events and panels.

as an ultra deep in furry everything person this is a big reason why I've been distant from a lot of my furry friends in the past few years, can't take seeing friends tear themselves apart over nothing or the constant rejection fear that someone will cut me off forever over nothing. the last furry con I went to had huge undertones of this dynamic even if nothing bad actually happened, and really soured it a ton for me.

I've been experiencing this deeply, myself. And I can't talk to any furries I know about it, because they're all... just... part of the problem, and would end up denouncing me as some kind of transphobic Nazi or something.

If someone does have a problematic view I don't see it as bad if they get challenged on it, at least inherently. What I take issue with is how such a large contingent take the attitude of never forgiving people for their transgressions. People aren't going to get everything right immediately. Then you have people making these call outs a massive, public ordeal on Twitter when they could likely handle the situation with a DM conversation.

That said, I think the rhetoric about the fandom being a social field of landmines is a bit overstated, but as someone with severe anxiety I definitely feel that fear about everything crumbling from a single misstep.

When I was waiting at the airport for my vacation a month back there were furries departing on our same flight. The ones by us were very unfortunate smelling and all wore odd animal shirts. And there was one little girl who was only wearing her wolf head around while her very depressed looking mother followed her around.

This is my only run-in with the furry culture.

there can also be species meetings depending on the con as well as ones dealing with actual science

There are often panels related to game development (obviously ones with anthropomorphic characters), various furry comics, animation, animal conservation and science like norenxaq mentioned and so on.

And of course there's always the dealer's dens/artist's alleys where artists set up to get commissions or sell existing works and collections.

the problem isn't being challenged by it, so much as like, taking a screenshot and posting it on twitter like you got "the epic own" on someone, and then siccing all your friends on them like dogs. In the past week this has been a heavy topic. in the past year or so, so much of furry twitter interaction has been people trying to dunk on other people, and just trying to get their hour of feeling cool in front of their friends. it's really frustrating to see. then everyone hides on alt accounts and says poopy doo-doo things about everyone, because for some reason in furry actual discussion leads to horrible fragmenting of communities and flinging insults.

This checks out. Everyone likes to wear their furry shirts to the airport so they can spot other furries going to the same con. A lot of the times my experience with furries in the wild is like:

and there are: furries :(

There's also a decent amount of children at cons, or parents who bring their families, which I feel is pretty baffling. If it was up to me, furry cons would absolutely be 18+. There are certain sub-groups of congoers(who aren't necessarily furries or fursuiters, but those aren't excluded either) who like to get uhhh, steamy in public.

norenxaq is post 80 I believe, and he is definitely not who I would point fingers at if I wanted to talk about the problems in the furry community.

At its core, the furry community is pretty cool, everyone gets a fursona or two and theres role-playing, costume making, story writing, art drawing, and music. The problem is mostly as starcow said, socially speaking, everyone is all over the place, theres a lot of hypocrisy, shaming, and entitlement.

I think you'll probably see this change in the next fifteen years since youtube has made the furry community a lot more mainstream, and lots of kids who are less "fringe" are getting into it.
