Houston, TX Only one bystander came to the aid of a Houston police officer who was struggling with a combative 17-year-old armed robbery suspect, but several more stood around recording the altercation on their phones (video below).

One of the witnesses filming the altercation appeared to be a uniformed security guard.

Help me! the officer yelled to her, as the suspect reached for his duty weapon during the altercation. Stop f--king filming and help me!"

No one is legally obligated to stop a crime (not even cops), especially so when their well being could potentially be put in jeopardy. Nor are people required to follow all orders from a police officer, only lawful orders. "Help me arrest this person" isn't a lawful order. The only thing they could get charged for is interfering with an arrest/investigation/etc., but standing around and not interfering kind of makes that whole point moot.

That's a good question. What would happen for instance, if the struggling officer called out for help, and a bystander stepped up and stabbed the perp in the head, killing them instantly.

Legal problems, or would this fall under the legal defense of "instructions not clear"?

And then the officer, if the video came out showing he asked for help, likely could be charged with a crime, so I can't blame anyone not helping in this situation at all.

It sucks, but aside from calling the police and alerting more authorities, I can't blame anyone who doesn't get involved in a criminal situation like this. That's not a citizens place and it'd more likely do far more damage than help.

The only thing the witnesses should of done, is phone for help. If they did that, cool. If not, screw them.

my friend called the cops on this guy having a psycho episode on the street corner, the cops brought an ambulance, said he refused to get in it and walked away when he was clearly on drugs or something. It was at that point I realized they don't give a shit lol. If I saw them fighting with someone on the street I wouldn't help either

I'm of two minds on the subject. One says the guard should have helped another human in danger and the other says if cops aren't obligated to help people then people shouldn't be obligated to help cops and help them do their job for them so fuck em. I'm leaning more on the latter though, honestly.

I personally think everyone is obligated to assist someone in need within their means. That being said, I bet that security guard wasn't trained for a situation like that while the cop was. There's a pretty big chance that the security guard intervening could have made it worse.

What? What was his crime? What would you do. I cant arrest people for having a "psycho" episode. There are 3 specific instances I can legal someone into the hospital and they mostly revolve around blatant suicidal threats.

One of these people is armed and supposed to put themselves in harm's way to protect others. The other is a random schmuck with no protection whatsoever, and no training on how to deal with an armed robber.
