Very hard to say, although John Carpenter's The Thing is an all-time classic.

Of course, if you want something with a pretty amazing cast, The Faculty features an absurd number of recognizable faces *including* Jon Stewart who plays a teacher. It's also a halfway decent alien invasion film.

Scream.

Other than pointing out the tropes they proceed to use, Scream isn't much better than any number of 80s slasher. Honestly, you might have more fun watching The Burning, which stars a young Jason Alexander.

I don't like the typical horror genre, I genuinely laugh at shit like Hereditary and whatever series The Nun is a part of. I think they're just stupid with bad acting. So my opinion might not matter much.

Tusk is a pretty good horror/dark comedy, IMO. Slow to get to the horror part though, so maybe not for a dedicated horror night.

Eraserhead has surreal elements. The movie is just unsettling as fuck to watch, more of that creeping dread than "aaah scary things!"

The Thing is always a wonderful choice though.

Ehhhhh, if it's anything like its sequel (Yoga Hosers), definitely not. Tusk I avoided watching since I'm not into body modification gore.

If we're tossing out horror comedies, we have:
-Shaun of the Dead
-The Cook
-Beetlejuice
-Ghostbusters
-Tucker & Dale vs Evil
-They Live

Wolfcop was also kinda funny, but its gags can drag on. Then Deb of the Dead was funny once it got going. And All Cheerleaders Die was funny at times.

I also watched Little Evil recently which, after an almost painfully bad start, had pretty funny moments.

Yoga Hosers was complete shit lol Tusk is definitely love it or hate it.

I made a thread on Hereditary when it came out and my biggest gripe was that the daughter dying and the psychological effects it had on the family would have been a more disturbing film than the clichd as fuck "spirit possesing the family after speaking with the dead in a spoopy candle lit summoning" bit.

I like my horror less supernatural, more "this could actually happen".

tbh, I think it was mostly done as a showcase for Depp's and Smith's daughters. Harley Quinn Smith has little business acting, although Depp's daughter seems like she *could* be a star given her range of talents and looks. Otherwise the movie had a handful of funny moments in the whole excruciatingly long thing.

I prefer supernatural horror to (I guess non-supernatural) monster movies to slashers. The supernatural stuff can often be kinda interesting because it can go in unusual directions. The same is kinda true of weird scifi horror stuff like +1

The director's cut of Alien isn't anything special. It adds just a few things, and also takes a few thing out.

The director's cut of Aliens however is significantly better than the theatrical cut and adds A LOT. The theatrical cut is still very good, but the director's cut is even better.

Alien 3 also has a director's cut that is significantly better than the theatrical cut. Although Alien 3 is nowhere as good as Alien and Aliens in any form. I still enjoy Alien 3 for what it is, but a lot of people don't like it.

Alien Resurrection (i.e. Alien 4) is best left forgotten. It's just plain horrible.

Prometheus (i.e. the prequel to the first Alien movie) is merely okay, but completely unnecessary. Nobody asked for or needed a prequel.

Alien Covenant is a bit better than Prometheus, but being a sequel to Prometheus, I didn't particularly care for it.

To me personally, Alien, Aliens, and Alien 3 are the only ones that I actually own in my personal collection. I consider them the "Ripley trilogy." Everything after that isn't worth owning.

Regarding your spoiler, did we even watch the same movie? I can see that as a "theory" but as far as what was shown on screen, to the viewer, there certainly was a lot of it. I dunno man. My brain probably isn't wired to enjoy that stuff. The first third of the movie was amazing and got me very psyched. What followed after though... I felt the same way about A Cure For Wellness. Why does every modern horror movie have to end with some creepy pasta-esque ending these days?

Most of the stuff it adds isn't of particular value, such as the news that Ripley had a daughter who grew up and died while she was still sleeping -- something ostentatiously meant as a character motivation for protecting Newt

Meant to comment on this, got distracted, loaded Netflix, saw Tales of Halloween so I remembered that I wanted to comment on this, got distracted by a topic announcing John McCain's death, replied to some topics, loaded Netflix, saw Tales of Halloween so I remembered that I wanted to comment on this, came back and saw another topic which distracted me, loaded Netflix, saw Tales of Halloween so I remembered that I wanted to comment on this... and, well, long story short, I kept getting distracted.

I had massive hype going into Trick 'r Treat -- given that I'd waited due to delay after delay, during which it got bumped twice for theatrical releases then finally was released VOD or something -- and was fairly disappointed. The overlap between stories was neat, but the chronology kinda sucked and Sam felt straight-up shoehorned into the school bus segment.

I liked Sam as a mascot, I kinda wish I had picked up some of the memorabilia when it had first came out, and he's largely why I kinda want a sequel despite being underwhelmed by the first film. However, true to form, the sequel *still* hasn't happened and looks further out than ever. Granted, there's still hope since it's an anthology with a costumed character unlike other films where the actors age out or become unavailable.

(As for Tales of Halloween, it wasn't great. I had *also* had high hopes for it. However, only "The Night Billy Raised Hell" was really anything special, although the "The Ransom of Rusty Rex" had a fun twist.)
