https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2018/08/27/640323347/the-school-shootings-that-werent

U.S. Education Department reported that in the 2015-2016 school year, "nearly 240 schools . . . "
We were able to confirm just 11 reported incidents, either directly with schools or through media reports.

Also, per their(school's) guess, stuff like incidents with scissors were misscoded as shootings. LOL
Toy cap guns . . . paintball guns . . . it's fucking pathetic.

This is because there is an obvious and concerted movement to disarm the citizens, because it is much easier to control a population that is not armed.

Mass shootings are actually extremely rare. Far more people die from vehicles and IIRC even pit bull attacks.

Republicans definitely aren't compromising enough on gun control issue, but the other side is the one that expresses absolute elation whenever a mass shooting happens, because that's their chance to show the world what a shitty evil place the United States is and how shitty and evil white people are. At least republicans have some incentive to prevent the violence from happening.

Mass shootings keep occuring and no one is disarmed, more people are buying guns and the authorities want to arm teachers,

Your conspiracy theory is insane

Sigless user logic. Its not elation, it's conern.

And going "Stop trying to show how evil the US is!" is so damn lazy. The US is the only nation with a mass shooting problem, there is no way to talk about or solve it without making the US sound bad.

You can't escape that

Yeah this is good to know, although this info did come out immediately after the claim that there were hundreds of shootings. Nice to see NPR follow up on it extensively.

I believe the narrative at the time was that they were including college suicides or something. This is a different stat.

The problem with that is that the left's response to gun violence is "ban guns" which alienates the people who would otherwise be reasonable. Because they see what the left really wants wrt firearms and are afraid to go down any slippery slope that would result in a ban / confiscation.

The ball is entirely in the left's court right now.

What's really interesting with the gun debate is how Islamic terrorism is basically the same thing statistically speaking yet both sides completely flip-flop their perspective on whether or not it happens enough to justify banning it.

School shootings lead to calls for gun control, which lead to paranoia amongst gun owners, which leads to people buying more guns and ammo, which leads to more profits for arms companies.

Republicans have all the incentive to make as many mass shootings as possible happen. Each one is a big payday.

I think his point is the GOP is arguing from the position of maintaining the status quo.
If the Dems want more gun control, there needs to be give and take, versus just take. If they're not willing to meet half way on national carry, there's no reason for the Repubs to pass stricter background checks.

Imagine being such a toxic and dishonest individual that you still parrot that bullshit non-argument about the military as if it has any merit.

The military would split into multiple factions composed of citizens who are pro 2nd amendment. In fact most of the military is pro 2nd amendment. The military as a whole would not be fighting against citizens in open warfare, and any remaining military force opposed to the citizenry would have to engage in guerrilla warfare.

Which has been shown to be highly effective even against modern military equipment. It's why Vietnam/Afghanistan/Iraq weren't cake walks.

I love it when people get aggressively defeatist about the idea of armed revolution.

It's like they completely forgot we're still fighting poorly armed and trained cave people in the desert.

Replace them with the most heavily armed civilian populace in the world, and spread them out across our vast country with all variety of terrain, and you think our military would do better? You're as naive as the fools who thought after 9/11 that we'd be in and out of the Middle East and insisted it's totally not an unwinnable quagmire of never ending guerrilla warfare against the terror organization du jour filling the power vacuum we created.

Rare would be if they occurred once a decade. Or even once a year. They are not rare in the USA by any stretch.

Individuals that think they know what's best or think they can profit from it.
There are no cabals, it's more like 400m people each working their own agenda, sometimes aligning with other's agendas and succeeding locally, statewide, nationally.

But another answer, is everyone. That's what government is. That's what laws are.
You don't form a political party to not try to control things.
Democrats are trying to control people. (And in this case, justice dems are hitting the anti-gun bandwagon pretty hard.)
Republicans are trying to control people.
Green is trying to control people.

I remember at th beginning of the year in January there were reportedly 18 school shootings. But they were counting incidents like;

-a boy went into the bathroom and shot himself.

-A boy had a gun in his backpack that accidentally went off, but hit no one.

-Discovering bullet damage to a brick one day.

Sure those are all unfortunate incidents, but should hardly be in the same category as Columbine.
