Anyone who has even a passing interest in sports should recognize this tactic, because pro sports teams do it all the time. When faced with an opponent who has an advantage, you use whatever underhanded tactics you can to try and secure victory, be that rough play, unsportsmanlike behaviour, or flat-out rulebreaking. When you are inevitably penalized for your actions, complain loudly about how unfairly biased the refs are ("Look how many more penalties our team received! It's ridiculous!"), then watch as the refs either crack down more on the other team, or start to let some of your own dirty playing go unpenalized.

The press is the closest thing politics has to referees, and as a result the conservatives have been screaming about bias in the media for decades now; depressingly, the tactic seems to have worked.

How about we just get the right to design, build, and tinker, with our own custom algorithms instead of having Google decide what content we should be shown. That's all that needs to happen. Full customization. Freedom. I want to know why im being shown the results i see and be able to adjust the "learning" parameters so that i can visit and explore things that i don't necessarily care to see a second time without it being pushed in my face. These algorithms they use are marketed as a benefit to us because they tailor the delivered experience by guessing what we want to see by what we've seen before. This does nothing but create an echo chamber and box you into content that confirms all your biases and stifles your expansion as a person. The internet is a key component in the movement of information and influences our beliefs about reality and what the world is like. But if something alien to you is intentionally filtering certain information from being seen by you, then it is effectively manipulating our realities so much so that it blurs the lines and distorts the possibility of finding common ground with the people we disagree with more and more0

I'm confused about the point that's trying to make with the link. The predominate sentiment in this thread by those critical of Google seems to be that Google is inherently biased. However, the link concludes that while the search results are slanted towards the left, the evidence isn't strong enough to conclude that there is an inherent bias within Google's algorithm.

Not sure why this topic has gone as long as it did, but it's WaPo so it's always going to be overblown. Nothing will come of this claim although, humorously enough, in an age where people are worried about Russia's ability to buy ads and post inflammatory content, you'd think that same crowd would WANT regulation

Realistically, at some point either Democrats, Republicans, or an unholy combination thereof will regulate search engines because government eventually consumes everything.

I was talking about when laws are passed at the state level to prohibit or hinder cities from developing their own municipal broadband network.
That is absolutely a case of big government imposing itself on small government, just as much as federal government overruling a state on a matter, if not more so.

When I disagree with conservatives -- which, by the way, there aren't many of in the first place -- I'm disagreeing with how far right they are on a particular issue (ie, GrimCyclone not wanting sex ed taught in schools, or Grim not wanting evolution taught in schools, or... well, it's a lot of GrimCyclone stuff mostly).
