Because fucking of course he was

Because it would be better if the victim was white? That's just stupid race-baiting.

She might not have been so quick to open fire if he wasn't black. It wouldn't be better if a white guy died. But if it was a white guy, he might have had a chance to say, "why are you in my apartment?!" before she pulled the trigger.

Not victim blaming, but you do you. After all, conflations are one of your specialties... that or the problem is you just flat-out don't understand what victim-blaming is so you're unconsciously conflating deliberate, malicious, persistent acts which are then written off by saying, "Well, the victim asked for it! Clearly he wanted attention for having the audacity to post in a forum used by hundreds of other posters, most of whom I'm not harassing," with an incident where an officer -- 100% in the wrong, no matter the races involved (which I know is a hard concept for you to grasp, but -- to paraphrase Michael Jackson -- it doesn't matter if they're black or white) -- made a stupid mistake and by every right should face at least a manslaughter charge for it.

Would it have not triggered your faux outrage had I specified that it was ANOTHER good reason to lock your doors? Or would you make a deal out of it for the sake of making a deal out of it regardless?

Spelling out the race-baiting doesn't make it any less race-baity. At least with Mead's original post he had the probable deniability of suggesting that the onus was on the media for using white-on-black crime as clickbait.

Which is a pretty hilarious accusation from a guy who flips on a dime to take the opposing viewpoint in almost any discussion in which I'm involved. I could decry slavery and you'd backtrack with a, "Well, wait a minute, maybe not *all* slavery was bad..."

Otherwise not even close to victim-blaming.

I can't find the case, but I remember reading a supreme Court case about self defense against on duty police as well siding with the victim. So the victims should be getting off more than they do, but they still do get off some times

And I do agree with you some times, for example the disparity in criminal punishment for men compared to women, or that we both are teetotalers.

This is flat out murder. Christ years ago I walked in on someone being in my apartment. Oddly enough they didn't end up dead because I didn't get all murdery... I did however say "excuse me, what the fuck are you doing here". Turns out he was the maintenance man and had to enter my apartment because a pipe had broke and the people below me had water flooding into thier apartment.

Cool. So she shoots a random person while drunk, then gets placed on paid leave, and then gets charged with only manslaughter. Cops got it good.

And it's unlikely she'll actually go to prison at all. And if she doesn't and is fired, she'll just find a job w/ a different police department.

And she'll get a nice "cool off" period to craft a story...err..properly recall events... before she has to give a statement of what happened.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-watch/wp/2018/07/31/study-cooling-off-periods-dont-help-cops-remember-officer-involved-shootings/
When someone shoots someone else in front of witnesses, the police tend to interview suspects and witnesses to the shooting almost immediately. There are good reasons for that. Eyewitness memory begins to blur almost immediately, then continues to fade over time. As for suspects, the police want them to commit to a story early, before they can come up with a narrative that clears them of blame.

But when a police officer pulls the trigger, the officer is often given a cooling-off period before he is asked to give a statement. Any other police officers who might have witnessed the shooting are also sometimes given time to cool off.

The discrepancy arises from the unlikely but popular and persistent theory that while the memories of regular people tend to degrade over time, the memories of police officers somehow improve after theyre given a few days to ruminate. A cynic might point out that this theory also gives the officers involved some time to collaborate on a story.

Generally yes, but murder under Texas law is a bit more broadly defined. For instance, charges are automatically upgraded to murder if the culprit "commits or attempts to commit a felony, other than manslaughter, and in the course of and in furtherance of the commission or attempt, or in immediate flight from the commission or attempt, he commits or attempts to commit an act clearly dangerous to human life that causes the death of an individual."

There's a few other clauses in there, but you could easily make the case this fits under the definition of murder as set out in Texas law.

Just another example of a cop killing a Black person and getting away with it. Not sure how you cannot notice you're not in your own apartment. Didn't the decor raise a clue!

Because she wasnt in the apartment yet. You should read things before commenting. And she hasnt gotten away with it yet, seeing as how theres been no trial.

Next-door neighbor Alyssa Kinsey said Jean's unit looked the same as everyone else's from the outside but did have a red half-moon-shaped rug outside the front door.

So, does she also happen to have a red half-moon-shaped rug outside her door, then?

Perfect example of a syndrome many cops seem to have which is "shoot first, ask questions later" especially when it comes to a black person.

I dunno. She may have bought one since the last time I was at her apartment. We havent slept together in years. But if he did have one and she didnt then she really has no excuse.

More false accusations, what a surprise. No, I don't flip flop like you.

Having nuanced views is hardly "flip flopping" and, should better information become available that refutes previous conclusions, I might change my mind. I'm not sure why you're trying to take pride in pigheadedness, especially when in reality you very frequently revise your opinions and often not for good reason. But if that's the narrative of which you've convinced yourself, I'm sure I can't dissuade your self-avowed stubbornness.

Good reason to lock your fucking doors, tbh.

Sure. It would have been good if his doors were locked. But there could be hundreds of reasons why it wasn't.

People are really taking a flippant remark more seriously than they ought to. Perhaps I should have included an emoji. But, in seriousness, it's just weird for an event like this to happen because it relied on quite a few variables which ultimately combines cosmically bad luck and, on the officer's part, amazingly poor decision-making.

She definitely should have immediately noticed a huge difference in the furniture and decor.

Yeah, doesn't make much sense. I guess if she was really out of it and then just keyed in on the guy she might not have noticed.

apparently the dude opened the door when the cop was trying to get in. then the cop shot him asap. anyways, she is being charged with manslaughter. wonder why they won't release her name.

It's sounding like the door was locked and he was opening it for her then?

In case this needed to be any less defensible.

wtf. If that's the case, I'm surprised she's not being charged with worse.

yeah it sounds like it was more like he was thinking wth is going on or maybe someone he knew was having trouble opening the door, so he opened it. i meant that he probably thought someone he knew who had access to his place was having trouble opening the door, so he went to open it.

she was trying to open the door and he heard all that noise, so he opened the door. then boom. like when you hear someone trying to open a door.

if that is the case though, then yeah, she should be charged with worse for shooting that dude asap. but the police are keeping the identity of this woman a secret. a lot of details a secret as well. still trying to figure out what happened.

this is wild tho. we know what he looks like, but we don't even know what she looks like.
