2003 Link looked sorta good against Aiai (hopeless fodder we have no other data on) and Fox (but 2004 Link clearly one-upped this by getting basically the same percentage against Yoshi) before then giving us three wretched matches, wherein he made Magus get wildly overrated for a couple years (also Tidus through Ganondorf), either failed to score significant SFF on Samus or managed to do so but was weak enough compared to later Links that it's hard to tell, and of course he actually lost to Cloud. I'm inclined to think 2010 Link was worse thanks to the Thrall match and maybe Alucard's suggesting Link anti-votes but once we get to actually strong opponents that people who don't particularly like Link were probably voting for instead anyways that might not matter much.

I like how Samus did better against Link in '03 than Mario did in '02.

And then Samus did better against Sonic in '04 than Mario did against Shadow in '03.

And then Samus did better against Cloud in '04 than Mario did against Sephiroth in '04.

Then when they finally clash, Mario wins 60-40.

Don't read too much into past results!

The stupid thing is that Metroid Prime wasn't even terribly strong in contests at first. Then again maybe it got SFFd a bit by Wind Waker in '04, but then again perhaps getting SFFd by Wind Waker is bad news.

Also Metroid Prime I suppose at least has the remote of excuse of having to share votes with Paper Mario in its sole '09 match. Maybe at the time we all thought it was just yet another example of Metroid completely folding when other Nintendo stuff shows up, but then later matches in the bottom 3 divisions in the bracket seemed to imply that perhaps the Nintendo games just hurt each other really badly when they share polls (see: Brawl owning MGS4 one round, then losing to it the next when Twilight Princess enters the picture. Wow, what a format 4-ways was).

Then we were fooled by the whole "Metroid folds vs. other Nintendo" and had Mario Galaxy as the favorite over Super Metroid, when all other evidence pointed to Metroid winning. I was a Galaxy fanboy who picked it to win anyway at the time though.

Chrono Trigger didn't boost for "literally zero reason". Every game from the SNES/Genesis era benefited (if you want to see it that way) because of low votals. Casual people have left, meaning only site veterans have stayed. If you had run BGE'15 having 100k votes per match as it once was, the results would have been a little different.

Now, if Crono himself boosts because of this or not is a completely different story.

I'd guess they do, Metroid is way past its point of being mainstream.

I'd hope so. Metroid is one of the last great Nintendo franchises and it's been there from basically the start with almost all being amazing experiences.

At least now the series has made a proper return after two underwhelming oddball installments.

Kind of odd to think Samus and Mega Man were among the Noble Niners who had made it furthest last contest despite their franchises being left for dead at the time. Gamers remember!

The problem is that while that's not exactly an unpopular opinion, per se, it's also not particularly widespread. Many of the 3D Sonic games have pretty big fanbases behind them (also Sonic Adventure 2 seemed to be around the fodder line at worst in GOTD), and even the ones that are typically considered to be "bad" have their fans. Some people even defend Sonic '06!

Sonic's icon status is probably a major contributor to his long-standing contest strength TBH, which has largely been proven by Sonic characters performing worse in multi-way polls. For a long time I was a little baffled as to how Mega Man was in the upper echelon of contest strength, since not only has he not broken out into the mainstream as much as many of his compatriots, but none of his games are really ever spoken of in terms of being among the best games ever. The only conclusion I could draw is that gamers REALLY respect Mega Man.

Also Sonic is one of the few video game characters who has been a global phenomenon. And he's a lot more GameFAQs-friendly than similar characters like Lara Croft and Master Chief.

Define what you call "good".

Both Sonic and Metroid had their first legitimately well-received games in a while last year. Going off of the general consensus you'd have to go back to 2011 for this to be true, unless you dislike Samus Returns and like Sonic Lost World/Sonic Boom/Sonic Forces.

Hard to say. It'll depend on how many teasers Allen wants to do this time. It'll probably be at least a few days though, maybe. CJayC used to have the bracket up within a day of noms closing, but I don't think Allen has ever managed that.

I asked Allen if a middle ground was possible with rallying, since some of us love it and some of us hate it. Pretty much only said he has a plan.

I hope there really is a middle ground, because contests without rallying are just boring as piss. We've seen it. Rivalry Rumble and Best Year blew. Undertale, Draven, Crono, Majora's Mask, Melee, Starcraft, Mario, L-Block.... those are the best contests, and rallies don't all auto-win contests. Missingno lost. Crono lost. Link's counter-rallies have lost multiple times. Mario has lost big after rallied matches. The idea that rallies ruin contests is just patently wrong.

Rallies didn't auto-win contests when we had enough votes from the site itself to balance it out.

Now we don't, so rallies suck harder than ever before.

Rivalry Rumble and Best Year weren't bad contests due to the lack of rallying, really. The main reason they were bad is because they were concepts that people just didn't really care about. It's impossible to really want to get out there and support a four-digit number. The lack of rallying is one symptom of that problem.

Personally, I think it would've been more interesting to see if Chrono Trigger could beat FF7/OoT, for instance, than to watch Undertale roll everything over. People tried to pretend, but that contest was effectively over as soon as it won its first match.

What was Undertale getting before the rallies started kicking?

ME3 was winning 65/35 up until the rally kicked in. Undertale completely flipped the script and more than doubled ME3 the rest of the way and did it all in about 8 hours or so, if I remember right.
