Because they're not exactly the same thing, and some people want to see cute girls doing badass things but without the in-your-face fanservice of Strike Witches.

Possibly, it just depends on the tone and setting of the show. The "cute girls sailing cute battleships" anime I mentioned (High School Fleet) got pretty serious later on, but the "cute girls driving cute army tanks" anime (Girls Und Panzer) treated the battles like a sport instead of actual war, and no one was really in danger.

I heard people mention that, and it's from the same creators, so it's possible.

The director said that it'll be a mix of 3D CGI and normal 2D animation. My guess is the 3D CGI will mostly be used for action sequences, rather than all the time. I've seen some shows put that to very good use. Hopefully it turns out much closer to something like Katana Maidens, with its fantastic use of CGI for fight scenes...





...rather than something like KanColle's anime adaptation, where the CGI looked completely out of place and just not very good at all.





It could end up going either way.
