This is going to have such varied results. I love it.

I'm on the mewtwo > sonic train

I feel bad picking Mewtwo > Sonic, because not I think that Crono and Sonic should be able to beat him, but after seeing 2013 mixed with how Pokemon is still on the up swing, I think it's entirely possible for Mewtwo to beat them, rally or no

I'll take Mewtwo over Crono based on Pikachu > Crono in 2013, though I'd be worried about a possible Chrono Trigger "boost". Sonic disappoints a lot, but nobody ever comes close to actually pulling the upset in 1v1 matches; I see no reason for Squall to break the trend. And in the end, I'll go with Sonic > Mewtwo because I don't think Mewtwo's strong enough to win there without a rally and/or bandwagon, which I wouldn't want to rely on with such limited information about the rest of the contest.

Edit: Also, you say these are the weak links of the N9, but I don't see Sephiroth here?

Voted Sonic > Crono but it's worth mentioning that I would probably take Squall over Crono.

Also this is without looking at past results and I will say I don't remember how badly Sonic and Crono actually did in the last contest.

Sephiroth was really high up there so he'd have to fall quite a lot for that to happen

Even a Vincent-esque fall would probably still keep him above Sonic and Crono from the last contest

and of course that assumes Sonic or Crono are somehow stronger or at least staying the same

Did Sonic really look that bad in 2013? I don't see any useful info in his first two matches (too many new characters), but Sonic didn't flop or anything. The Mewtwo loss obviously doesn't look great, but Sonic's numbers on Bowser there seem normal enough.

Bowser has honestly looked kinda bad just about every time he faces a decently strong Nintendo character. Even when he wins (like against Kirby in 2005), he doesn't look great.

I mean Sonic was probably fine in 2013 but "fine" for him is still near the bottom of the Noble Nine

I think you're undervaluing Alucard quite a bit there!

Or maybe overvaluing Knuckles, not sure which.

Either way, Knuckles and Tidus have already been in fourpacks, and I don't really want to reuse characters except for this particular instance.

Why do people think Sephiroth suddenly dropped insanely much compared to everything else. And what's more, why are people talking like that has been proben at any point?

Kirby doing so well on him in 2013 was forgivable under the circumstances but 57% on Big Boss wasn't particularly good, FFVII's long-term trajectory appears unfavorable so people may be assuming further drops, and unlike Cloud Sephiroth's not in Smash to help try to patch the holes.

I honestly don't think 57% on Big Boss in MGS's peak is that bad and I also think the anti-FFVII isn't as bad as back then. FFVII looked good in 2015 before falling victim to rallies like everything else. I think it's crazy to imagine Sephiroth having fallen that drastically.

I can't see what should have suddenly made Squall able to beat Sonic, FFVIII hasn't exactly been given anything lately unlike other PS1 FFs. Sonic>Squall is the only thing here I'd pick with great confidence.

Ended up voting Crono>Sonic, it'd have to mean whatever boosted Chrono Trigger helped Crono too, which I'm not entirely sure about and Mewtwo is tough to predict no matter where the others are.

Mewtwo > Crono. Crono's nowhere near as strong as he used to be. A popular Gen 1 Pokmon that's also in Smash will probably take him. The game is stronger than the protagonist. That said, I legit have no idea and would love to see that one play out.

Sonic obviously takes Squall - Sonic's not as strong anymore, either, but he hasn't been nerfed enough to be unable to take a late-90s Final Fantasy lead not named "Cloud Strife."

I think Sonic beats Mewtwo but that's too close to call. Really, the only one I have any confidence in is Sonic > Squall.

Mewtwo > Crono is a decent upset pick. Squall > Sonic is probably riskier than it's worth though. And the poll seems to reflect that.

Mewtwo is the riskier pick unless you're just straight up betting on a rally. Mewtwo has never looked anywhere close to that good before CBIX.

like I don't think Squall > Sonic is that risky even if he doesn't win

like this Sonic confidence is kind of stunning to me because nobody has ever believed in him until this very poll somehow

I was one of the rare Sonic believers in the early days of the contest, so to see him winning this poll pretty easily to me feels strange.

Yeah alright, but post Brawl, Sonic has reason to have recovered and Squall really doesn't.

I mean as much as I would love for that to be true and now Sonic is suddenly #5 in the Noble Nine or something (I'd pull the trigger on Sonic > Mega Man even as I argue for Squall to beat him because who cares about consistency) I don't think he's really earned the benefit of the doubt at this point

It's too bad that after today there aren't any good characters left to put in a fourpack with Mega Man and Sephiroth. Not that were many to begin with, since those two are in a weird place among the N9. Seems like a fun match to argue, at least.

Squall has featured in multiple games since the last contest. World of Final Fantasy, Dissidia Arcade, the multiple gachas, you name it. His FF8 costume was a megahit with FF14 players as well. His appeal is probably fairly consistent I think.
