Their stuff is almost always good. I think they're technically under contract for a few more seasons, so just quitting might not be an option. They still put out new stuff. I'm sure they do some work on SP during the off-season, but the bulk of it seems to be done in three months. They have more than enough time to work on other stuff. They probably just like to take it easy; I'm sure they have "never work another day of their life" money. No one else can be that level of "real life asshole dialed up past eleven and into the teens" that a show like South Park needs to make topical commentary. It's be like killing off Archie Bunker: most of the reason people watch is to see him proven wrong and get a comeuppance. On the other hand, going after Stan, a character largely a bland viewer surrogate, seems lazy. Yes, Stan is often considered the most basic, bland character, but he still has a huge influence on the show's story telling. His relationship with his dad and Kyle are two huge themes on the show. There's also the fact that he's supposed to be based on Trey Parker himself. Taking the show forward with Stan permanently dead wouldn't be easy. It's possible, but I think his death was supposed to just be a shocking thing to contrast the episode's point about how America is becoming numb to school shootings. They toned the political stuff down a bit (though didn't get rid of it) in season 21, after being a bit over-the-top in 19 and 20. It's not completely classic South Park yet, but it's definitely moving back in that direction.
