In anticipation for the new game coming out, I figured I'd try the first game. What should I know :o

Get all of the mcfarlane ranch main missions done early. You'll get the lasso, a decent horse and not have to see a certain npc constantly fawn over marston anymore.

learn texas hold em it may help with the game.

it's like poker but you're playing with 2 cards for yourself and the dealer has his own set of cards. you use those cards to get the best hand (every other player has to do the same).

or you can be a manly man & punch bears into submission like a real man.

Save often. Unlike eg. Grand Theft Auto where dying respawns you at the nearest hospital minus some cash, dying in RDR takes you back to your last save.

Autosave is a thing, but it might not kick in if you're just walking around doing random shit.

Avoid Rio Bravo.

You need to move fast as lightning to finish the Twin Rocks hideout side-mission if you don't want to lose Honour.

Oh, and sometimes it can be a little confusing at first to work out how to win a duel. Aim is just as important as speed, if not more so. I'd say stick to the head or hand.

It's been like 8 years but I have a memory of a friend and I playing the multiplayer and being stuck inside the cabin because the moment one of us walked out a cougar would murder us

the game is pretty straight forward, but be sure to do the "I Know You" side-missions when they come up later in the game

there are only about three, iirc.

I don't remember a specific location, but I do remember frequently getting mobbed by bears in the wooded section of the map. Like I'd kill 2 or 3, and then while I was skinning those, 3 more would show up, etc., etc. until I got tired of it and left

Should I wait until I'm done with the main game first? Does your save file continue into the DLC, or is it separate?

It's separate I think. It would be better to do it later, unless you don't mind seeing characters you would have seen later in the main game.

There's actually this weird glitch where, if you stand in a certain area, they won't attack you.

There's a spot in the forests in the northeastern area, where there's a small clearing where there's always a bear or two. You kill those bears, and an endless stream of new bears will spawn until you leave the area or die (though there'll only ever be two or three at a time).

Be warned that the hill around Fort Mercer is also cougar territory. If you haven't already discovered that for yourself!
