Persona has a very strong core audience, but it doesn't reach the broad audience.

Persona 5 sold like 2.5 million copies and looked really strong on GameFAQs. Those days are over, it's mainstream now.

Fails the mom test.

Fortnite is an example of a mainstream video game. No one knows what the fuck a Persona even is outside hardcore JRPG fans.

If random non-gaming mums are your barometer, then there are only six or seven mainstream games out there.

Let's put it another way: Persona is now bigger than Metroid. Hell it's easily the third biggest JRPG series now behind only FF and Pokmon which probably puts it at around five or six for all RPGs.

If we are talking Jrpgs, Mario Rpg/Paper Mario would definitely be number 3. Kingdom Hearts would probably be 4th. Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest and Tales are also probably a bit more well known and popular than Persona.

Also, instead of the mom test, I put games through the coworker test. If my coworkers know what I am playing, then it's mainstream. If they have never even heard of it, then it's niche.

I have no idea which thread is the actual discussion of these character battles. Anyway...

Jeez, how naive of me for thinking a beloved breakout character like Chloe would beat a popular character like Lightning, regardless of her own qualities. Could've sworn people gave up on FFXIII, but don't underestimate the power of the brand.

Chloe is beloved? I don't know much about her and I assume most here don't because life is strange isn't the kind of game GameFAQs like. FF13 was hated but I think most of the hate was about the game itself (you know, no towns and all) and not the characters/story. Lightning isn't a bad character. She also has 3 main games and appears in Dissidia as well. Honestly, had FF13 been well received like FFX, Lightning would be a very strong character, probably stronger than Yuna or Tidus ever been.

Luster can probably give us the real count when the poll ends.

I keep seeing people say they are surprised by this Lightning performance but really she is a character where recency probably hindered her performance than helped it. I mean one of the biggest complaints about Lightning/13 in general was the oversaturation from it being crammed down our throats.

I'd think more than most she would benefit from being years removed from her game releases. I'd imagine the FF hate may have died down a little too now

Not really, we were getting around 10k votes, multiply them by 1.5 because it is a contest and if we assume half the voters are registered that should only give us 22-23k

How are you able to get this?

You can tell the approximate real vote total from the charts, take the difference from the poll results, and that gets you around the number of double votes - the number of registered users. And since you know the number of registered users, you can get approximately the number of guest votes by subtracting that from the chart's approximate vote totals. You could calculate how the registered users are voting if you had exact user/guest totals but just eyeballing it from the charts isn't gonna cut it for that?

You mean a cinematic adventure game? Although I can understand it not having as huge of a follower as with The Walking Dead, but the kind of game GameFAQs doesn't like? What DOES GameFAQs like really? Other than the things people are familiar with.

And I'm pretty sure a lot of critique is as much on narrative of FFXIII as with its linear gameplay. At least for people like me who expected more out of its lore and characters, if not for the mishandlings of its development team.

But I digress. Brand recognition gives this Genderswapped Cloud the advantage.

Ok so as of now, looking at Dante vs Cuphead, we have 21208 points, with a total of 13954 votes.

Putting that on an equation, the number of registered voters has to be 7254. So the number of non-registered voters is 6700.

Which means 52% of the voters are registered.

If your game tries to do something different and Ulti thinks it failed, he will rail against it.

Just to bring up something that has been on my chest, but in the grand annals of opinions, I do not understand how someone could loathe Shadow of the Colossus THAT much. Okay, I'm a huge fan of the game (at least based on what I remember of it), but even people who dislike that game tend to admit that it has a lot going for it. To be fair though, Ulti can use whatever criteria he wants to decide how good or bad a game is.

Also, to be fair, a random guy saying a popular game is the worst game ever isn't nearly the same deal as something like Big Rigs which is widely considered to be one of the worst games ever. Also, I guess if Matt Ezero can defend the likes of Sonic '06, Sonic Boom, and Aliens: Colonial Marines then it probably shouldn't be surprising if someone hates an acclaimed game that much.

Anyway we just seem to be at a point where gaming opinions are wildly divergent (well, opinions in general, but that's another topic), and I think a lot of it has to do with older games seeming dated to some vs. newer games coddling the player too much to others, to summarize it as best I can.
