Never done this before, but damn is there a lot of rages to collect. It wouldnt be as bad if you learned everything in between when you leap and he comes back instead of just learning the battle he leaped on and the one he came back on.

Side note: As someone who always just ditched Gau before and never really used him, he is now one of my favorites.

for SNES / GBA, no.

For mobile, they fixed that so you can get all the WoB shit you missed (except things like Ultima Sword)--the only thing you CAN'T get are some bestiary entries if you miss them. There's one enemy that is only found by failing to follow the light on your return to narshe although I can't remember which one.

Gau just sucks to use.

- Rages are annoying to get in general
- Once you put him in rage he wont accept commands until he dies or the battle ends
- Basically have to use a guide to know what any of his rages do and to figure out which ones are worth using
- Using a normal party member in a game with 12 of them (not counting Umaro whos just Berserk the whole time) is so much easier and you can completely cut Gau out of the party after you get him (since even in 3-party dungeons you have more characters than you can fit in all 3 parties)

My usual method with Gau is:

- Get Stray Cat in WoB
- Get someone with an AoE special, maybe two

Random battles -> AoE
Bosses -> CAT SCRATCH 4 DAYZ

Same! In my last playthrough I decided to go ahead and give the whole cast a fair shake instead of just leaning on half of them like I usually do, and Gau became my runaway favorite because of how unique his gimmick was and how self-sufficient he is.

I did try to get all the rages for completions sake, but there's really no reason for it otherwise. I really only used about ten of them (one for all the elements, Magic Urn for curaga spam and tankiness, Rafflesia for Entice, Stray Cat and Mu because duh, eventually upgrading from Meteor on the Behemoth to the Retainer's Shock for non-elemental damage).

Entice is legit amazing. It can be blocked by an enemy's magic evasion, but if it hits it's perma confuse on anything, including bosses. Using it felt a little like rooting about in a debug mode or something.

Rhinox has Life3 as a rage, which is ridiculous. Just set that rage and let Gau make your party become immortal.

ChickenLip rage! is one of your few Earth elemental attackers with Quake. You just have to make sure your party is floating before you use it or it will kill you too.

Doom Dragon's N.Cross skill also sets a unique paralysis status, ala Entice.

Seriously, Gau got so much free shit with his rages.

nice, this was one of the first ones i got, but i havent used it yet.

I think thats part of the charm of gau he is completely broken with how powerful he is, but its so much you have to figure out and grind to get it that a vast majority of people will never even touch it or see it. This game is a masterpiece man

Incorrect. WoB enemies still appear on the Veldt in WoR, as long as you encountered them naturally during WoB.

This is your Rage Bible. Specifically, section 6.2 details how enemy packs are encountered on the Veldt. You'll want to study this closely if you actually intend to collect all of Gau's rages. I mean, I've played the fuck out of FFVI - it's probably my most-played console game of all time. I have never had a complete Rage list. I've been close, and my current work in progress "perfect save" on my SNES cart has all but two. I've spent probably 20 or so hours looking for just those two monsters. But you have to make damn sure you encounter everything your first time through. My advice is to print off a checklist and physically check off the monsters you encounter. Maybe even start over. I mean, there's a couple easily missed monsters on the Phantom Train. There's the Narshe security checkpoint, which has a rare encounter with a second monster. There's a couple hard to find overworld creatures in WoB.

The one thing that isn't an issue is WoB monsters on the Veldt in WoR.

Yes, packs only matter on the Veldt. You encounter a formation in the wild, then that formation is unlocked within its pack on the Veldt and you can encounter it there.

There are also tricks to skipping a number of packs all at once, but I don't recall how that works exactly. It should be somewhere in that FAQ.

I'm missing Io for sure. I don't remember the other offhand. I had it written down but now I can't find that either lol.

Now for some high-quality Veldt hunting! Let's say you want a rare Rage in a
crowded Pack. Let's say you want to get Test Rider (Flash Rain looks so gosh-
darn cool!). Now, just jump there using the above described trick and fight
until you've fought a battle from Pack 34. Now, the next battle *could* be Test
Rider. You try, yet see that it's Red Wolf x 3. Load again. Now every time you
fight, it *will* be that same Red Wolf x 3 monster formation. There's only one
way known so far to change the upcoming fight, and that's fighting a battle off
the Veldt. That's right, either take the Blackjack/Falcon to some non-Veldt
lands until you fight a normal random encounter, or (provided you're in the
WoR), dive into the Cave of the Veldt to kill some Toe Cutters or, if you're
lucky, Rhyos. Save, return to the Veldt and try another time. Missed again?
Repeat. Using this strategy, you'll be able to actually pick Rages from the
Veldt rather then having Gau Leap anything which happens to cross its path.
Note that this is an emulator-trick only, as cartridge Save and Load screws
with your location in the list.

That's not true at all. The unavailable Rages are the same across versions, and I had accounted for them. I knew the specific monsters I was missing and that they could be Raged.

Though I can't disagree that the time was wasted.
