Wow, at some point in time some people have had opinions on the context of words. That doesn't change the actual definition of the word 99% of people actually use.

I mean, ultimately, it's not really that big of a deal to use humankind either. I just can't help but feel like making a specific note of it is basically just hunting for superficial problems at that point.

This topic is so bizarre... using male words to indicate both genders is sexist. I don't even want to argue because this has been established for so long. Why are people acting like this professor is "fighting" to change things? The "fight" has been over since the 1980s. George Carlin had a rant about political correctness going too far--but in that rant, he said that changing mankind to humankind is a good idea. And this was 1989!

When I went to college in the late 1990s it was just a given that we had to avoid using sexist words like "mankind." And I was at a Catholic university so it's not like this was some bastion of leftist extremism. I also remember having a lengthy discussion about it on these boards in the early 2000s. From what I recall there were a few complainers but most of us were just discussing what terms were the best in terms of not being sexist or overly gendered, without sounding awkward. We weren't even arguing over whether or not we should have to do it--just discussing the best way stylistically to do it.

So now in 2018 I come in to this topic and people are acting like not saying "mankind" is this new thing that this liberal professor is trying to push on you all of a sudden... and a lot of the liberals seem to be acting like this is still up for debate! It's not.

For the record, I do think humankind is a little unwieldy so I wrote "humanity" in my college papers.

I'm pretty sure TC meant "advance shelters" in the context of "shelters built in anticipation of future need"

And I have had plenty of profs who mark in pencil *shrug*

But yes it's possible TC is full of shit too
