I used to like Buffy and Angel when they were new. Now I fear like if I looked back on them I would just cringe. I wonder if this how Twilight fans will feel in a decade.

Xander and Drac are never actual gay lovers. Xander still has lingering effects from being Drac's thrall during the series. Drac does seem to have tsundere feelings for Xander as he completely lets himself go after losing Xander as his manservant.
Afterwards Xander fights through Drac's control over him and Drac ends up respecting him as a person.
Is it a metaphor for gay love and abusive relationships? Most definitely. Was there any actual gay love shown? Nope.

Yes he was but it was so bad that everyone in the entire fanbase (to my knowledge) pretended it never happened because the episode was so awful.

The fact that the canon comics not only brought him back but made him gay and put him with Xander is like firing 17 point blank shotgun blasts into the back of the head of the idea of any of it being any good.

Lol, basically. It's kinda continuation of Dawn's teenage crush on him. Xander did bag 2 Slayers though, Faith took his virginity and he had a relationship with one of the Slayers in the comics before Dawn.
