First round match with the two highest rated characters for me would be a tossup between Luigi/Edgeworth, Ramza/Garrus, and Yuna/Godot.

Second round would probably be Ryu/Shepard. That's the only match in round 2 between two top ten (or borderline top ten) characters for me.

Phoenix/Kirby will take that crown by a wide margin in round 3 though. The only realistic possibility that could top it is Squall/Snake.

Gordon Freeman could be a joke boss who actually powers up into a decent threat by luck, but then goes back to being pathetic afterwards.

Also, Magus is the end of disc 1 final boss whom the game pumps up as the main villain early on only for him to get ignominiously killed, cast aside, and never mentioned again

so basically Emperor Gestahl

and Vincent can be the guy who's just so much more powerful than the hero early on that you can't even beat him the first time you fight him but then you curbstomp him when you fight him later on

Well, except Magus doesn't get killed and cast aside for the rest of the game after that moment comes.

The random battles can consist of all the cult RPG characters we've gotten into the contests over the years: Vyse, Laharl, Neku, Luke, Jade, Velvet, Haseo, Kite (be honest: you completely forgot we've had not one but TWO .hack characters in these contests), Ghaleon, etc.

Also, Master Chief has a move that reduces Frog's HP to 7.

Man, this is way more fun than it should be. I'm going to be lying in bed thinking of more things until I fall asleep.

I figure the Noble Nine, since we aren't using them in a playable role, can figure into the plot sort of like Zelda's seven sages as deities whose influence causes whatever the plot of this game is.

Maybe there's nine crystals that are the main collectable of this storyline that the heroes have to collect before the villains do.

The Noble Nine are the Living Macguffins whose power Kefka is trying to steal (through some nefarious and obscure JRPG villain method), and Frog has to save them before Kefka breaks them after 24 hours.

Oh right, one thing I did forget to mention. You guys were talking about how it looks like they've phoned in some of the new Smash movesets, but I feel like that's definitely not the case with K. Rool. Tossing the crown, having the blunderbuss that can suck characters in and shoot them out, the boxing glove, all perfect move choices.

Jay Solano is the optional superboss who isn't actually canon to the storyline. CATS is the minor villain who disorients the protagonist by talking trash and then running away repeatedly.

When we first started getting bracket prediction stats for round 2, people thought they were incorrect because the total number of picks for both characters would add up to 7221 (our total number of brackets this year). It was later determined that the number of picks for the winner was correct while the picks for the loser includes all picks that didn't choose the winner. For Dante/Lightning, this means that the picks for Lightning includes all picks that didn't choose Dante as the winner. This means that Lightning, Chloe Price, and Cuphead were all grouped together under Lightning's total picks.
