Just announced via a special streamed video. Episodes Aranea, Lunafreya, and Noctis have been canned, leaving only Episode Ardyn coming out in March.

Also Episode Ardyn will have its own animated prologue to provide context so clearly theyve learned nothing from the complaints about 15s extended universe.

Actually they did learn something - the games director, Hajime Tabata, has left the company.

Other news from the video:

Standalone version of the multiplayer mode Comrades will be released December 12, free to people who own the current version - but the current version will no longer work so get your trophies while you can. Unless youre on PC in which case the new bosses and other stuff will just be patched into the current version and there will be no standalone release. Original season pass will see a price drop to go with this.

Meanwhile in the single-player version, there will be a crossover with XIV that starts the same day, in which a Miqote names Yjhimei will cross from Eorzea to Eos to help Noct and the Bros take down XIVs Garuda.

Even though I already bought the game on release, I didn't get the season pass so... it looks like it's actually cheaper just to buy a new copy of the Royal Edition in order to get everything. =/

Yeah, I bought one of those "Complete" digital packs on a PSN sale despite having the game on disc because it was cheaper than buying the Royal Edition and Season Pass separately.

I think they realized the core of the game was totally fucking awful and had nothing going for it, and they were basically spooning sugar onto a pile of mud.

Maybe they'll work on making a good game instead of continuing to add to a terrible one. wishful thinking

No, just the original season pass (covers the three bro episodes and multiplayer) and the Royal Pack (which is all the other additions to Royal Edition that werent in the season pass; buyers of Royal Edition got both).

Episode Noctis actually looked like it was going to build on an alternate ending that Episode Ignis presented. Episode Ardyn is probably going to be a lot of world building (presumably set before FFXV itself). Aranea and Luna were probably just filling in gaps.

Episode Noctis is the real loss here.

yeah no I got that but it doesn't seem like anyone is discussing this is kind of a gigantic deal. Square just lost tens of millions of dollars on a project, cancelled further development for one of their successful games ever, and got rid of one of their two project leads who actually could get a Final Fantasy game out the door.

This would be on the money except that Tabata was the bloody miracle worker that salvaged FFXV from Nomura's decade-long fumbling of the ball. He was by all rights a very talented director and probably the sort that Squeenix desperately needs right now, and they turned him away. Meanwhile, Tetsuya "what deadlines" Nomura is still at the company poisoning every non-KH game he touches. If KH3 isn't any good either then they're going to be in an amazingly bad place.

I liked XV more than XII and XIII...

But again, Square keeps finding ways to fuck up its own momentum with bad press. Not that it has much, but it seems like every successful game they get now is accompanied by news like, "OUR FF GAMES ARE FUCKING UNFINISHED MESSES"

I'd hesitate to call Tabata talented when he was the person behind 3rd Birthday. (And FF15 but obviously that's more divisive)

It's a bigger problem than just Tabata. It's shit like them making action figures of FF7 Remake characters. Based on that one trailer. Like what are you even. Making trailers for games that don't exist. Making action figures based on the trailers. What the fuck.

Then the usual AAA dev fuckery like executives probably demanding the game be open-world and demanding it have DLC.

Kind of impressed DQ dodged all these bullets
