For the purposes of this scenario, the dog passed out from the smoke and cannot run out beside you.

For the purposes of this scenario, the parents of the toddler have passed out from the smoke.

For the purposes of this scenario, there are no other loopholes or situations that somehow allow you to miraculously save both.

What do you choose?

Plus, at that point, the baby would probably be an orphan since the parents are passed out inside the apartment. But rescuing your own dog actually makes sense. Though, anyone who would save the baby would probably try to do both. In real life, I would try to save both because Im not leaving my dog. But I havent voted because I honestly dont know how to answer...

What a horrible scenario on all accounts...

The fucking civil part of me says the baby, but the thought of seeing my dog-- my best friend-- perish in flames in my mind for the rest of my life would make me want to commit suicide like nothing else. Like I hope that this paragraph isn't mod worthy, the feeling would be so intense, but there's no other way to describe it.

Then there's the fact that humans would have much longer to have to grieve and have an even wider spectrum of psychological sadness to deal with (sorry doggos, this is true; I am not comparing this to emotional sadness though, which is different). I would hear the wails of an infant in my nightmares every night, feeling the pain of the parents due to my inacti--

So I can't point out that I don't currently have a dog OR an apartment, and that hell will literally freeze over before I have a kid of my own, AND I go out of my way to ensure that no one else's kids are ever in my house, so literally every facet of this hypothetical is alien to my decision-making processes?

Because I was totally going to do that.

Well the baby's parents are dead (passed out in the fire), so might as well let it go with em. My dog at least would be happy afterwards. The baby wouldn't.

Also we are overpopulated and babies are loud, so it probably annoyed me before that quite often, it deserves to burn.

Would depend on which of my dogs it is. One of them isnt going to be around much longer anyways so i might go for the baby if its him. In general though i would definitely go for my pet over some baby. Though i could see myself trying to go back in if it looked like it was remotely possible.

Although even if my dog isnt involved id probably aim to save one of the parents over the baby.

Why?

I view it as a loss to more people than the baby. Most people have friends, their own family is probably closer to them than their baby, and then even general acquaintances might be more sad to hear it were they likable. Whereas with the baby the surviving parent might hate my decision and me as a result but outside of that unless someone else actually played a significant role in its life id expect flak only from those sad that the baby was a baby. And that just doesnt mean as much to me.

All that is assumptions though naturally. Parents could easily be on their own. But were the scenario involving parents and a baby i actually knew then in most cases i would absolutely want to hear that it was one of the parents that made it out if not all of them could manage.

Yeah. To be fair, I do care about my dog now and she likes me. After a while, in my head she became less of a loud rat and more of a little girl. I thought she was lost one day and almost cried, which is really weird for me to think about.

I'll still jolt awake if she gets in my room while I'm sleeping. I'll immediately have a nightmare about dogs. Can't fix the subconscious. I'll be in the kitchen and she'll sneak up behind me, when I turn around and see her I actually jump a good foot into the air. I never go in the front door because that makes her growl, always the garage. I like her, but I also think she's directly responsible for my anxiety issues.

I don't care about any other dog though.

The way I'd see it is the baby has it's whole life ahead of it where as the parents/parent not as much. People being more connected to the parents is indeed true in most cases but by extension they probably would care for the baby too in some way. I doubt anyone would say to you that you shouldn't have saved the baby. Even more so if one of the parents survives anyway.
