Top 5 for sure.

It's been 15 years and they still haven't made a gta that comes close to SA. I know why but I just don't know why. After 4 killed my love for the series I found out that they just opted for online (god I hate online in gaming industry) and never bothered to make another gta again. People say 5 was "better" than 4 but the improvements are too little and at its core is still like 4 so it's not the gta san andreas or hell even vice city we deserve.

The rpg elements... the ability to swim (truly mindblowing back in 2004) and fricking planes, sa had it all. It was the first gta that I beat without cheat codes because the game was fun enough even without them.

What are you talking about? GTA 5 is way better than San Andreas it's not even close. I guess it's the nostalgia goggles.

V looks better visually and controls better but the characters and plot are way inferior, the missions are repetitive as hell and the map is hot garbage in comparison to SA. SA is hard to go back now b/c it's dated but GTA V isn't "way" better

@saspa

GTA Bore(IV) was by far the worst game in the series, but they made big improvements and changes for GTA V so that the game was as close to a SA successor as possible.

I love VC and SA too and see GTA V as the next best GTA after them. Give GTA V a chance as it is a major course correction after all the complaints that 4 got.

Mind you the game only has Los Santos as a major city but there are other towns and places to go besides just boring city. Los Santos is not bleak and shitty like Liberty City was, there is a much more upbeat vibe in V vs the depressing garbage IV had.

This was the first GTA game where the slice of life aspects made me really self conscious. The whole thing about maintaining fitness and watching what you eat got me here. Later in GTA V Michael's yoga workouts, Franklin's thoughts when he smokes, and drunk Trevor kind of resonate with me.

There's a reason Rockstar were considered the best at making an open world game and rightfully mocked all those developers that tried to copy their formula.

I remember before gta 4 came out we'd theorize about how amazing the new generation of gta would be, how it would have photorealistic graphics and the ability to go into any building and how much more processing power would help the game (no more popping effect, as hilarious as it was to explode in a plane because you crashed into a tree that popped into existence all of a sudden) and so much more.

I'll admit I actually did play ballad of gay tony and it was... not bad, I got san andreas lite vibes from it, like an amateur was copying san andreas in rockstar's new "rage" engine with the ragdoll physics they seemed to love so much last gen.

I actually was on the precipice of buying gta 5 a few years ago when I was game starved, and checked out a couple of videos.

While I have many questions, one in particular is cheat codes. I can't remember, where there cheat codes for faffing about in the city? And if so was it like that garbage method in gta 4 where you pull out your in-game cellphone and input a 9 digit number for each damn code (I'm not kidding, that's actually what they did for gta 4. Just remembering this makes me want to punch the designer behind it in the face)

GTA V was boring compared to SA. Boring cheat codes and a entire open world map you couldn't really interact with.

I dunno about yall but San Andreas was the most fun I had playing a GTA game, GTA 5 just felt a bit more realistic to mechanics wise for a GTA game(was 4 even more realistic?). I dont want a Saints Row, but a little more arcady feel might have been nice for 5.

Apparently the codes all spell something out using the letters on the respective numbers. So they're, if anything, easier to memorize (in theory - since in practice, nowhere lists the actual phrases, just the numbers) than the button combo codes.

Still my favorite GTA game. Obviously V is better technically (gunplay, graphics, physics, AI), but I maintain that SA has its own pluses.

I think it's much better at rewarding the player, with more areas, features and so on regularly becoming available. There's a real sense of progression, from unlocking something as basic as Emmet's guns early on to owning businesses/assets later on. In V, many of the "rewards" are a slap in the face, and the businesses themselves are disappointing compared to SA's. The casino is particularly good in SA (and many of its missions are optional).

Upgrading weapon and vehicle skills isn't for everyone, but again it feeds into the sense of progression. I actually enjoy the vehicle schools, although I can see why they annoy some.

And the missions... There are some amazing ones in there that haven't been topped. Even the shorter missions are fairly memorable for me.

I love (and sometimes hate) characters like Smoke, Toreno, Woozie, The Truth and Tenpenny.

The game definitely has its flaws, but it still has so much going for it.

Hill-hopping in a mock San Francisco was the thing I looked forward to the most leading up to SA's release. San Fierro's exclusion in V was also one of my bigger letdowns, even if it was expected.
