As we all would have assumed years ago.

But poor MegaMan who finally broke once and for all the Noble Nine.

If someone else (besides Seph or Mario) loses this round I say we also say they broke the Noble Nine.

I cant imagine Sonic or Samus losing.... but Snake....

Yeah.

RIP boys. One hell of a run, its a shame this site has become such a joke you are no longer 9 unassailable gods.

Yeah, no one should be beating main characters from those games...

i think fatal 4-ways are different enough that it's a real argument against l-block. the noble nine was defeated by missingno, but was still worth talking about because we'd all take crono again today. i think it was something worth talking about as long as it seemed most likely they were the strongest characters on the site under most circumstances. i think that is what was proven to not be true yesterday.

I dont think its obtuse at all to point this out in topics where people pretend the N9 never lost before because reasons. Spamming it is annoying, sure. But the fact is they were not some undefeated force until Pikachu this year.

This comparison makes no sense at all. All of the contests have been in the form of polls. Pikachu did not challenge Mega Man to weightlifting or whatever. Slight format change =/= complete change of sport.

K...

If there is an undefeated college football team, and all of a sudden they lost in a 4 way because 2 other teams ganged up on them....

Or one year we decided basketball is 24 minutes instead of 48 and there is no halftime despite the fact theyve spent their whole life doing the other.... that loss somehow counts....

It's perfectly fair to delegitimize victories from joke entrants like Missingno or rallied characters like Draven if you're trying to gauge the true "popularity" of a character on the site. This was a match that definitively demonstrated that Pikachu is a more popular gaming icon here than Mega Man--and really was the first of its kind to do so against any NNers since the contests started.

MM lost by such a small margin that it's hardly definitive. He could very well win the potential rematch in a few days. If anything, it means the two are roughly equal in strength. Same with X and Tifa.

In the end, I can't think of a better character to break the Noble Nine than Pikachu. The yellow rat is easily one of the most famous gaming icons, and he wouldn't have been out of place at all if he was this strong from the beginning. I feel this is less a fall for the noble nine as much as it is Pikachu finally gaining his due strength.

Of course, Elusive Eleventh Doomguy has yet to appear in a contest, but I'm sure he'll shatter his way through the upper echelons once he makes a contest.

I'll never understand how Pokemon has increased in strength here over the years, when the peak popularity was probably 1999. I guess Smash is a huge factor.

Something to note is that we can expect Pikachu to still be strong in another contest and he is the only one to have stay consistent or gotten stronger with time (during the last contests). For a while you could say Vincent was consistent too but now, welll...
I feel like that makes Pikachu's win is more meaningful because L-Block and Missingno (who did break the streak) were one off.

I'll never understand this argument.

In past contests, the complaint was "There's too much outside influence. GameFAQs isn't actually deciding this vote like they should."

This year, the complaint is "There's not enough outside influence. GameFAQS is deciding this vote, when we shouldn't."

Breaking the NN needs to involve a character that can both beat one of the original members *and* be sustainable enough to take their place in future contests. Missingno obviously does not meet the latter definition. Pikachu? We'll see. Though if Zelda wins here, I'd say without a doubt she is the NN breaker. Pikachu needed registered board votes to beat one of the weakest members of the Noble Nine. With or without those votes, Zelda winning against one of the strongest members solidifies her place.

Yeah, every time someone beats a member of the Noble Nine, we have this argument about if this constitutes a "breaking" of the Noble Nine.

I first voted in one of these contests during an L-Block match in 2007, and I first became a Board 8 regular in the offseason between BGE2 and CBVIII. As a newcomer, I was one of the ones arguing for Missingno to be "added". But it was explained to me then that the Noble Nine was never about the streak. That was part of their prestige, but just because it ended doesn't take away from the fact that they were an elite force for years. And with all of the wacky formats we keep getting, and the weird rallies, believing that is the only way to stay sane. Not when a character can go from weak enough to lose to a character that's never won a match and a character that needed the supersized field just to make a contest to beating Link and then back to insanely weak.

I'd consider a four way match where the competing pairs got like half the votes a legit break of the NN myself

If you wanna pitch obvious LFF affairs or joke entries I'd still argue Vincent > Crono in 07 was pretty on the level. Like I think ditching that one is more technicality based than ditching Pikachu > Mega Man
