This was my biggest problem with it. They show early on that his portals are very capable of severing an arm. Just cut it off of him. Should've at least tried and had the stones disrupt the portal or something. As it is, we're just left to wonder why this collection of brilliant minds didn't even consider the most obvious solution.

I 100% haven't seen the movie so I'm not sure, but didn't Doctor Strange looks through a lot of possible futures and jazz? If he saw that Thanos could disrupt the portals, it'd make sense that he never bothered trying.

I don't feel unrealistic for having hoped for a good kind of mad. There are shitloads of good, mad characters with shitloads of goals and plans that can evoke some sympathy in order to make things interesting. Simply saying, "he's crazy" doesn't give him a pass to take away a potentially good element from a story.

I think the idea was that Thanos had always had the idea to cut the population in half, which stems from his own planet where he suggested it. He basically went 'mad' with the idea that it was the only way to save the universe and prevent a disaster from occurring similar to his home world.

Basically, he thought it was the only way and was blinded by his own inability to see above it.

his gauntlet gives him virtual omnipotence, he could easily change the laws of reality to work like that if he wanted.

the real true reason his plan doesn't really make all that much sense is that it's not really the reason he's supposed to have. but they came up with some new motive to try to make him seem sympathetic to the audience. his original motive was he just wanted to cause a lot of death to get his girlfriend horny. but they wanted people to almost root for Thanos in the movie so they changed it. and that's what they came up with. his motive in the comics makes more sense, even if it's pure evil

I believe Josh Brolin addressed this once. He says those are indeed perfectly viable solutions, Thanoss plan is indeed bad, but hes a) too proud and b) too guilty to even begin introspection on that. The amount of evil hes done over his stupid plan... he was crying over Gamora. Hes deluded, he cant afford to even consider its not correct.
