This is true. 10 years ago I would've been considered "far left." I had tons of ludite beliefs and loved the Unabomber's manifesto as well as The McDonaldization of Society. I volunteered at CSAs and farmer's markets. I believed in gender neutrality. I was in full support of veganism being viable. I liked anarcho syndicalism, etc. I definitely would've been called "far left" back then.

Now as soon as I say to people, "hey, maybe it's kind of shitty to block x person or post x person's personal information online?" or "why are you wasting your time calling their employer about something they did outside of work," or anything of the like -- they suddenly think I'm defending the person in question and accuse me of being a bigot or nazi or whatever.
Maybe I'm just not an asshole who understands scope and has some values?

Maybe I'm not a barbarian (no offense to barbarians) who supports public execution of individuals?

I thought this was called coastal elitism.

It's not elitist to try and have discourse rather than dismiss and discard people right off the bat. An example is a Facebook group I got banned from (I can't remember which one, maybe I Know For a Fucking Fact That Isn't Science). There was lots of discussion about transphobes "infiltrating" the group (which had nothing to do with trans rights) -- and if anybody said they believed in two genders or blah blah blah they'd be blocked flat out without warning. One of the mods was trans.

So in a discussion about the bannings, I said something like, "If somebody isn't volatile and is truly just ignorant - why would you not want to talk with them, provide resources, educate?" and the mod said I was defending them, blah blah and said it's not his "job" to educate the ignorant.
This is a stark contrast from the early days of the internet when people would argue endlessly.
Minds CAN be changed, and people CAN be educated.
I can say personally, I never understood the whole word "female" being offensive until someone educated me. Was I volatile about it? No. Could the person(s) involved easily just blocked me and pissed me off flat out? Yeah - probably, which is the norm in most cases now. I could also point to tons of other examples where people swayed my opinions through intelligent conversation. GMOs, the benefits of frozen produce, my beliefs I used to have in alternative medicine, etc.
