It makes me feel really old to whine about what's currently trendy and resorting to phrases like "back in my day" yet it keeps coming up.

How do you stay above that sort of shit?

I usually just state what I dislike about a thing, or otherwise I roll my eyes and move on. I never use the "in my day" card.

Maybe so but at the same time you feel like your only options for finding current entertainment are reaching an audience you're not in.

It's reasoning like that results in stuff like never discovering new music past a certain age (because all you can enjoy is stuff you liked when you were 15). I'm assuming that's why "dad rock" is a thing.

When has mainstream culture not been shit? Stop being a surface dweller, I guarantee there is still good music of whatever you like still being produced.

I was only using that as an example.

I don't even consider myself a serious music aficionado.

1. There was never a back in my day
2. It's always been and always will be shit.
3. The problem is the (social) media.

Just that.
Keep your mind open to what you like so you don't shut out everything.
It's all the drama these days that gets me. It's like white trash put on fancy clothes so no one is ashamed of liking it.
Someone tried to tease my tastes the other day, but I just reminded him that opinions are just that and I don't let others sway me (except family and stuff that know me)

Try to understand it better. Learn what purpose it's serving socially and culturally, why it's serving that purpose, and who it's serving that purpose for. Break each element down into its constituents and attempt to draw parallels between those constituents and the constituents that make up your culture. You'll start to find cases of "oh, this is like the XX of my age". Keep judgement out of the way until the very last step.

As far as musical tastes and whatnot, you may never care for newer music. You could try to make various social psychology driven conjectures to try to make its various stylistic elements "make sense" to you.
