I'd guess they had the stats for all of North America (or possibly even the world) and just misquoted them, but that's still a pretty significant screw-up. Silly CBC. The overall sentiment is pretty reasonable, but providing such ridiculously wrong numbers is just going to keep people from taking it seriously.

The assumption may be that a year's purchasing is equal to a year's consumption if averaged out over a long enough period and enough different people, which isn't a bad idea, but in practice people hoard enough unused paper for many years that the time frame for that data may be too short. ...
