Good crafting systems - Witcher 3, Subnautica. Regardless of whether you think they're too rudimentary or not, these ones make brain sense. If you break down a wooden oar you found lying on the beach you can get Timber. Timber can be remade into a crossbow body. Or maybe you find some metal salvage and you break that down to make titanium which you can use to build strong structures. Cool. Easy.

Bad crafting system - Xenoblade Chronicles 2. You need 14 smegflaps to break down into 25 smorgasbogens to mix together with 5 flangsticks and then you insert those into the smeglal converter to get ultreon power. Yeah sure that's real easy to remember and follow -_-

I guess it depends in who you are.

My roomie got rdr2 from his parents for Christmas and he is one of those who hates crafting in general. I told him it's not necessary but it is a big part of the game.

I only hope he looks past all that and actually plays the damn thing.

crafting is probably my least favorite thing to do in a video game, as @shockthemonkey said it usually results in just collecting random shit and clicking craft on a menu, there's no connection between gathering materials and making stuff

Id kill for an RPG where the crafting was less about

Once you get Amrorsmith to level 50 you can make Cursed Demon Armor

And more about the skill involved and the process. The melting of the ore, the casting, shaping, polishing etc.

You could make those systems deep and actually fun. Instead of just combining a few ingredients in a menu and hitting a button.

that sounds really boring though. It's an rpg not a blacksmith simulator.

This is often the make or break for me. I think the games I mentioned buck this trend because you do feel like the materials you're collecting make sense. Like in subnautica if you find uraninite you can be pretty sure it's going to be useful for making some kind of nuclear energy.

Because they found a way to make junk useful by being able to dismantle it. Like in Skyrim you can collect a silver bown and it will have no actual function beyond decoration or something you can sell, but in Witcher 3 you can melt that down into silver you can use to make a silver sword. I think that's intuitive. You can collect materials based on what you think they can be used for.

I don't really see a difference between your two examples. You're still collecting random stuff that gets turned into other random stuff. The only difference it sounds like is Xenoblade doesn't use common terms like you are used to.

I'd like it better if crafting involved more customization on the items you craft. Instead of "Orcish Sword +3", you would make a weapon unique to you that you could improve and customize visually throughout the game.

The WWE 2k games have a pretty good belt making option that allows you to make custom belts.

I want that in an RPG but for swords and armor.

while I definitely agree some items are slightly intuitive, the reason I brought it up is because I also think there's a significant number of crafting results that are extremely unlikely you'd ever make them on your own and there aren't ingame tutorials either.
