I liked it!

There's apparently a 10 year plan in place for more code geass content

The end of this movie certainly made it seem like there would be another

what would be the right way to get into the series?

i'd imagine it would be to watch the first two anime series, and only then see the movie (?)

I would say it's better to watch the two TV series then read up about the difference between the recap movies and the TV series. There's really only one change that kinda big. The new movie takes place in the same timeline as the recap movies but even that one change doesn't matter too much so you can watch the new movie off of just the TV series.

Code Geass has mecha and oranges. Maybe that means you'll like it if you liked Evangelion.

What is the big difference between the original shows and the new continuity?

There are a couple other tweaks as well but it mostly has to do with motivations and small details and aren't big like that.

For instance, the Black Knights betrayal isn't as stupid in the movie. They originally want to talk to Zero to find out the whole truth but get manipulated into a full on rebellion, instead of "We're going off the word of one of our worst enemies that our leader has magic mind control powers! How dare he!"

So I saw it. It was pretty okay. Reminded me of a lot of the things I love about Code Geass. Not sure it really did anything special on it's own, but since I haven't seen anything Geass related since R2 aired, it felt really good

My review:

I spent the first 1/3 of the movie being annoyed at the English dubbing. It was pretty typical of English dubs - overacted with sentences that are longer than the space of the scene allows for so they say it fast. Then Lelouch showed up (in a very fanservicy seen recreating the end of the first episode) and his voice just felt right. It felt like Lelouch. From then on I wasn't too bothered.

The Knightmare Frame stuff was pretty mediocre. The fights had no substance - it was just holding pattern type fighting until the very end.... then they just ended the fights. No good choreography, no visceral feel, no utilization of the scenery. Just pretty mechs shooting lasers.

I enjoyed the strategic opponent that appeared and gave Lelouch real trouble. Not necessarily because she was his match in intellect, but in practice turned out to be his match. It's always a lot of fun seeing Lelouch rise to the strategic occasion.

Though the fighting sucked, the champion of the enemies was kind of interesting. The thing I liked the most about him was that they actually don't ever directly tell you the key to his strength, it's just kind of implied. How did he know Suzaku would fall backwards in their first fight? Why did he fall apart in the final battle? Sister told him, but she wasn't around tell him how to succeed anymore.

They tried extra hard to include as many characters as possible. I'm not sure it makes sense for everyone to be in Lelouch's team but I guess that's what happened.

CC's final scene was touching. They didn't spend much time at all pushing that narrative, but it was sweet nonetheless. I'm not so sure that they've actually committed to CC end though...

Oh interesting, I don't think the showing I went to indicated whether it was subbed or dubbed, but since my city only has one theatre playing it once a day, there wasn't much of a choice anyways.

The theatre around where I live just had two separate entries for subbed and dubbed. I'm not sure if this is common for other theatre chains.

I saw that with Your Name (which I actually chose the dub for and was pretty good). I guess it's just however they choose to do it in individual cases.

JYB is a fine VA, but Lelouch is too ingrained in my mind as having that original voice. Can't stand the dub for that reason.

They had it as 1 day for subbed (May 5th) and 2 days for dub (May 7th-8th), but I guess you saw it on a day that was different from those.
