2nd is more involved than just stealing his car. Basically some underworld hot shot that even gave John his freedom to live with his late wife is calling in a favor he cannot refuse. He does this favor, but the guy then puts an open hit on John because the favor involved killing the dude's sister.

He gets revenge on the guy at the expense of breaking the Continental's rules (no killing on hotel grounds) so he's excommunicated from the underworld with an internationally open hit and the movie ends when he has a 1 hour head start.

John is like the worlds greatest assassin killer guy. Got out of life by doing an impossible hit so he could spend life with his wife. She does of cancer, leaves him a dog. Dipshit mob kid gets mad he wont sell him his car. Steals it and kills his dog. John kills entire mob to get to son.

Second one starts with guy who John owes a favor too forcing him to kill his sister since John back in the life. After her death he gets her seat in a criminal syndicate and betrays John by putting a 7 million dollars contract on his life. All assassins are after John. He hunts him down and breaks assassin guild rules to kill him. He is now excommunicated from his organization and is all alone as the contract is raised to 14 million and goes international.

That's an awful description of the second movie though.

-John Wick, badass unstoppable killing machine assassin, retires to be with soulmate
-Soulmate dies 5 years later of disease, sends him a puppy to take care of as a final memento
-Mob boss's son kills his puppy and steals his precious 1969 Mustang Mach 1
-John comes for revenge, slaughters all get in his path, extracts revenge, gets dragged back in and goes on more murderous yet stylish rampages. Lots of people die. Lots.
-In the end he breaks the assassin "code" and the whole city of New York and even the world is after his bounty.

one thing i'm confused, wouldn't the italian guy come to claim his mark regardless of the events of the first film?

or he is only able to claim his mark because john sort of come out of retirement due to the events of the first film?

It was a mutual agreement from what I understood. Santino said he would have respected John and not used it had he stayed retired.

1: Theon Greyjoy is a little prick that must die. People keep getting in the way and asking if Jon is back. Jon doesn't really have an answer. Then, yeah he's thinking he's back. Jon shoots everyone twice because he watched Zombieland.

2: Jon retrieves car. Old acquaintance cashes in favor. Jon goes on a sewer kill spree. Then he falls down stairs a lot. Jon gets a bullet resistant outfit and shoots guys twice that are trying to kill him.
