It's not a problem with so called "sedentary" lifestyles - Americans are more fit and active than ever

It's the diet that's making them fat and bloated

What's an average American breakfast these days? Pizza with a steak on it?

If you're active enough you can just burn that off.

You can eat a lot of fast food that way and still stay fit

This gets a lot harder as you get older

Every year I have to tone down the diet to keep the same weight and I exercise a lot.

Sedentary lifestyles go hand-in-hand with poor diet. Almost every single friend I know who was a twig in college got pudgy once they got an office job. They sit all day, snack, and then eat convenience meals for dinner cause sitting all day will make you feel like garbage. Your metabolism also starts to slow down at that age, but they don't realize they need to adjust their diet.

Well their employers are forcing them to work 13 hours a day or else they get branded as "not passionate" about their job and get fired

300 calories of pure sugar and literally nothing else. No nutrition, nothing of substance to make you full. You just drink straight calories and stay hungry for more.

That's why I don't get the hatred people have for diet drinks. They're just zero/low calorie replacements for regular soda. It's an improvement for people who are dieting.

Personally, I'd rather just drink water instead of diet soda. Most artificial sweeteners taste awful. I can tolerate Sweet n Low and Stevia, but aspartame makes me gag.

Artificial sweeteners still fuck with the body's fat system even though they have no calories. They can make your body more likely to store fat around the midsection.

Calories in and out might explain it, but it's not an issue that's unique to the USA. World wide obesity rates have tripled since the 1970s, which seems to be due to the wide availability of food from the advertising and manufacturing food revolution of the late 20th cent. It's hard to fight our genetic desire to stuff ourselves with wide availability of food, though there appears to be a solution through government regulation. I think the Chilean government introduced black labels on foods it deems unhealthy, which caused a noticeable decrease in consumption of such goods. Telling people to be active and eat healthy might help like Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign, but I think it pales in comparison to what a government can do. Based on what I know about the US government and its people though regulation doesn't seem likely.

Not in equivalent quantities they don't. You would need around 20 glasses of artificially sweetened soda a day for it to have a noticeable effect.

It comes down to convenience. Nobody cooks anymore and so they eat whatever is most available and it portions they can't or can't be bothered to control. It's essentially a cultural problem and regulation will only succeed in making people poorer.

That science is wrong and the calories you take in and exercise dont directly effect your weight because the body is some sort of mysterious entity when in reality we have all the studies in the world that literally say only eat what you need

thats because its not so simple to 99.9% of people and thats why an industry has been created to figure it out and to make money off of it also. if calories in calories out was the true way to lose weight then there would be many industries that wouldnt be there today.

i agree with that but it doesnt apply to most people who are overweight. that would mean every single person whos unable to walk or get exercise would be overweight which is obviously not true.

why is it that a person can go through all different types of diets and visit so many doctors, trainers scientists, and nutritionists and still cant get rid of that stomach fat? theres a few reasons why and most of professionals never understand it.

What I am trying to call out is the logic that people are more active when this is the age of the convenience; where you can get anything at a moment's notice, from a ride to getting your groceries delivered to your front door. And there are distractions galore to get you to chill out in your house, from your phone to your tablet to your computer, there's netflix and Facebook and videogames all being super popular. And we see the consequence of these lifestyles as there's the common sentiment that younger people have more trouble engaging in discussions with others (hear say, honestly), where more kids are getting glasses for their eyes, and we have records showing people do spend more time living their sedentary lifestyle and higher obesity rates than years ago.

You say people are more active but everything else says otherwise. Now to claim that people want to be more active, I can't say but body image being a genuine issue lends to your favor.
