I have been promoted and I currently travel 10 mins to get to work. However with this promotion I will be travelling 45 mins one way. I would earn about 300 a month more. Do you think it's worth it? Also was wondering how long it took you all to travel to work one way?

45 minutes is 45 minutes, regardless of whether youre sitting in traffic for much of it or not. I guess it could make a difference if you really hate sitting still. For me 45 minutes is too long of a driving commute no matter what. Id never want to have to do that on more than a temporary basis.

If you look at it how I do, 1.5 hours a day, wasted, not being paid for. Just sitting in a car, maybe listening to music. 7.5 hours a week. 30 hours a month, just sitting in a car. Wasting away. 360 hours a year, 15 days of your life a year. In a car just driving to work.

15 days a year, driving to and from work. Really think about that.

This. It really depends on the drive.... and the job.... Job before my last one was around a 45 minute drive, but the drive to/back was cake due to the time I was going and I liked the job. Job after that was like 10-15 minutes... but I hated it. I'd take that 45 min one over it any day of the week. Back to a job I enjoy and it's like 30 minutes.

The guy asked "is it worth a 45 minute drive" and your response is basically "it's not 45 minutes."

TC would likely not have called it a 45 minute drive if it regularly takes more than 45 minutes.

And to answer the question: depends entirely on the job. Will you enjoy the new position more than the old one? Do you have bills or other stress factors that an extra 300 a month would help to alleviate? Is the drive itself a pleasant one with nice roads or scenic views?

There's all kinds of factors that go into it. Way more than just "it's a longer drive but I make more money."

Yup if you're asking is it monetarily worth it, i'd say no if you don't absolutely need the money. You're getting paid $10/hr basically to drive to work.

I can find better uses of 1 1/2hrs/day than driving for a slave wage.

Thats (I assume) a pretty decent raise but I dont know if Id take it. Maybe if it was a stepping stone to a better position down the road.

I fucking hate driving though; my last job was a 20-30 minute commute and that was pushing it. Its easier if its highway driving / less traffic but thats still a big chunk of your day.

Sounds like an extra hour of work a day that you barely get paid for. Personally it'd stress me out. But it also depends on how much that is compared to how much you already make.

I used to have to go 45 minutes for a 12 hour shift job. If it hadnt been manual labor I may have considered it worth it.

Ive known plenty who have done 45 minute drives to work. So I guess it depends on how much you want/need the extra money

I drive about 45 minutes to work and 1hr - 1h 15m home everyday: it sucks. I almost wreck my car on a daily basis in the rush hour traffic, and it really feels like I have no time left in the days. I've been looking for another job ever since I started. I just can't afford a place closer because my office happens to be in the most expensive 20 mile radius in the entire state. I spend more than 5% of my net income just on gas.

Personally, I think so. That sounds like me two years ago. Lived about ten minutes away from work, then got promoted and had to go to a different location that was 45 minutes away.

Absolutely hated it. They only gave me an extra $2 an hour and the work was a lot more stressful. Not to mention it was six days a week. I never actually sat down and did the math, but if I had to guess, all (or at least most of) that extra money I was making went to gas and then the extra maintenance I had to do on my car.

I guess I could put up with a 45 minute drive if I was making a fortune and only had to do it for a few years. Or if it was only four days a week or something. Or if I absolutely loved the job.

But no, never again.

I think I'd be okay with that, but I dunno, maybe it'd have to be for a little more money. I wouldn't mind the drive, though... I love having time to listen to podcasts. My only concern is regionally we can have pretty bad weather in the winter and a 45 minute drive on a normal day is a nightmare in ice and snow.

I don't have my degree and this job is about to pay me 30 bucks an hour. It's not getting better then this for me any time soon. Also I live with my mom who lost her job 18 months ago at 57 on top of medical issues. She was supposed to move out in June. That's obviously not going to happen so I'm here. She's not incapable or anything but I'm the only one bringing money in right now and I can't leave unless she's okay.
