For me, it's gotta be the asinine "capture the wight" plot in season 7. That was when I finally realized how terrible the writing had become, and it never recovered after that point.

Why didn't the night king just hang out on a mountain 1000 miles away and control his army remotely?

But to answer the topic, it was when the viper stupidly lost to the mountain for no reason.

He intended to get a confession as well as making the Lannisters look bad in public.

his entire goal was vengeance on Tywin over his actions at the end of Robert's Rebellion

Oberyn became blinded by his emotions and was caught off guard

no bad writing here

there are a ton of examples of really awful shark jumpers in the show but Oberyn was consistent shown to be overconfident and brazen and, surprise surprise, it's his downfall

sometimes people do stupid things

and sometimes they do stupid things outside the arm reach of a 10 foot tall giant. It was a cheapo death, but it wasn't shocking or interesting like the previous ones that made people excited. It was just dumb. And starting the next season is when everyone agrees the writing took a huge decline.

That makes it the jumping the shark moment.

Arya killing the Night King will probably be the moment most people will point to, it was the first real let down of 8 seasons leading to absolute nothing.

For me though, the first real let down I saw was when they gutted Tyrions passed with Tysha at the end of season 4, and changed Shae into someone sympathetic. That was such a more epic moment in the books when Jaime confesses what really happened to Tysha, and had a massive impact on Tyrion in the next book (and all the rest I imagine). After seeing the rest of the show, I still have no idea why they took all the umph out of this plot thread

The entirety of Dorne or Barristan Selmy.

Really sad for me because Selmy and Hotah's actors READ the books and seemed to really love the source material/lore.

when none of the people who knew about all the secret tunnels in King's Landing even suggested having Arya sneak in and assassinate Cersei. then the Hound could have saved her from zombie mountain and gotten his revenge at the same time. Jaimie would have died protecting her instead of under a bunch of rocks

the writers probably thought of it and were like "shit, she can't kill the Night King AND Cersei"

Everything about the show changed for me after Barristan's death. I'm sorry to sound like a drama queen, but nothing about the show really mattered after that point, when something so thoroughly stupid and pointless as that could happen. Shireen, Stannis, Dorne, Blackfish's offscreen death, Arya just 'getting better' from a vicious stabbing, Pokewight, Littlefinger, Dany forgetting about the Iron Fleet - all of these things pissed me off to some degree, but they didn't shock nor surprise me. The bar had already bottomed out.

This is why I always have a bone to pick with people whose hatred of plot armor runs so deep that they just want major characters to die for no reason other than shock value and 'realism.' You get something like Barristan's death in that case.

If they lose the battle of winterfell and retreat to Drsgonstone and the White Walkers storm Kings Landing. You can have the good guys go to kings landing to kill the night king/kill Cersei/save the people of kings landing. Killing Cersei and the Night King in the final episode makes this the greatest series finale of all time.

Yeah there's no consistency. Barristan had no plot armor. Arya, Tyrion, Sansa, and Jon had endless.

This. Stannis was the real start to the end of the series. The bad pussy line/Dorne plot was what tipped it over.

Season 7 was just literally made in fan service. But it was still watchable because they hadnt fucked it up beyond all hell. It was the season 8 episode 3 where the entire series was officially ruined and left a black mark on the entire show now

I wouldn't go as far as to say the show jumped the shark (I still enjoyed it to the end and was satisfied with the ending), but it definitely felt rushed the last two seasons. The only episode that really bothered me, as someone else mentioned, was Beyond the Wall. Too many ridiculous last second saves and teleportation. Other than that the last two seasons were fine IMO, just could have been drawn out longer.

I don't know when it would be considered to have jumped the shark, but 8-3 was the turning point for me. Silly on top of silly, on top of stupid. Motherfuckers were buried under wights, then a quick cutaway and come back and they're totally fine. As much as I hate last minute saves, I'll take that over just completely unexplained saves any day.

The whole battle of Winterfell tbh.

Sure you can see the decay starting prior to that, but with so many bad decisions in 75 minutes that's really the flashpoint of where it went to ****.

It was definitely the wight hunt. There were some questionable decisions before that that people have mentioned ITT, but that was the most ridiculous, cartoonish one by far.

Around the time when the Dorne and Ramsay arcs took off. It was clear at that point that the writers stopped trying to tell a story and just tried to shock the viewer. Killing off kids in brutal ways, Sansa rape, etc. It was just seeking to shock with no substance.
