No before she was 18 it was free. She piggybacked on her parents travel agency plans.

And while that helped it's really not the big deal it seems like.

Traveling to places like Canada and France and Japan is easy mode.

Traveling to places like North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Ghana etc. Dealing with the paper work. Thats where it gets hard.

So then her mission wasn't "completely self-funded". This seems like one of those semantics things you'd normally be all over if you weren't already arguing a position.

The wayfarer said she began saving up at age 12 to fund the goal of visiting all 196 sovereign nations on the planet and never looked back on the promise.

Yeah before she was 12 she went to some easy ones for free. Then she started her mission and achieved it.

I'm honestly not sure I agree

The countries were being an attractive woman would help you are the ones that are easy to visit.

The countries that are harder to get into tend to not like women.

I think it would be easier to visit all 50 states if you're a cute girl.
But every nation on Earth? Much easier if you're a man.

My one concern was safety. Traveling alone for a good portion of that? I guess the proper research and the accelerated nature of staying somewhere briefly helped.

Those of you asking what all the hate is about, if you happen to be referring to the conversation I was just engaged in, there isn't any.

My comments were in response to someone who scorned another user for noting how attractive the girl is, saying that making comments about her appearance after she accomplished something is why we need feminism. My counter argument was that her looks probably helped her achieve her goal, so I don't see why fussing about someone noting her attractiveness was needed.

looking at her instagram, it seems evident that she developed business partnerships to promote a number of the places she traveled--at least those that had classic 'tropical' settings where photo promotion would draw attention. just looking at the attire variation, these couldn't have been trips on budget airlines with no carry on and all clothing in a personal item.

the photography is professional in those shots, basically modeling work. good models make a lot of money.

her worldtour album seems to be representative of some of the countries where there wasn't modeling work to be done--mostly shots on landing or in secure areas (palestine notably she's in a room with a security officer).

her success seems to be a mixture of several elements that are well out of reach of 'normal' people. that normal people would be jealous is understandable, most of us aren't capable of being models.

also the news story appears to have tripled her number of followers

in her own words:

http://lexielimitless.com/about/

I have been traveling for as long as I can remember with my family who started a travel agency.

The amount I saved kept me going for the first year and a half of my travels. From there Ive been working as a travel consultant in my familys agency when Im in California and also working as a photographer/blogger while Im traveling. I do a lot of research in advance to find the best deals, utilize points and miles for my flights, stay in cheap accommodation like hostels or create content for hotels in exchange for accommodation.

this doesn't mean what she's done is not impressive--she clearly was learning from her parents' work, developing skills necessary to make this work. safe bet that her longer-term plan is joining the family business. her book will probably be very useful for other travelers in identifying worthwhile places to visit that are not yet overrun by tourists.

but it does mean that those skills are not in just anyone's hands, and modeling to pay for a trip is just not something regular people can do. we can't just follow her example and expect a comparable outcome.

that she's working for the family business also underlines the point that they are helping--although it may well be that she's doing more for their business than they are for her, especially given the media attention she's getting now.

the point wasn't that they can't feel attracted. the point is that whether or not men are attracted to a woman is often more important than their accomplishments. like here, they want to talk about how hot they think she is rather than appreciating her really amazing accomplishment, because that is the more interesting thing.

If her parents are travel agents she probably got good deals on flights. It helps but it's not completely necessary. You can still get around by bus/train.

The gist of what people seem to be arguing about is that if she wasn't attractive, would she have had the same opportunities?

I'd say probably not, but maybe she would have worked out something else.

Quite the accomplishment, but let's not pretend that she didn't have the privilege of wealthy parents (and working for them) and gaining sponsorships through being an attractive woman.

I'm not taking anything away from her, but very few people are born into a situation where they can pull this off.
