The fuck?
That'd be like opening up a coffee shop that only serves tea. Well, then it's not a fucking coffee shop.

People didn't say data mining before someone coined it. Merriam-Webster describes mining as the process or business of working a mine

The quote I quoted is literally from that same dictionary. Mining does not just have one definition.

similar to how it describes butcher as someone who does any combination of slaughter, dressing meat or selling it. Analogously, the words "mining" and "butcher" take on a more general meaning when you put the respective descriptors "data" and "meat-free" in front of them. The reason you haven't seen this before is because it's recent. Similarly, machine learning is not actually learning in a psychological or pedagogical sense, AI has very little to do with actual intelligence, proving things colloquially is entirely different from logical proofs, and so on.

You seem really hung up on that line in the definition that says that one who sells meat can count as a butcher. The thing you're missing in that is it's talking about meat not meat substitute. Now I'm not saying that to demean vegan meats or anything but to simply make you understand that there is one fundamental problem with your desire to use the word butcher to describe the selling of vegan meats: All animal meat that is sold has been butchered. On the other hand, vegan meat is not butchered in any way whatsoever(it is created via the mixing of ingredients). Yes, you can slice vegan meat, but you can slice butter and cheese and tons of other things. Slicing something is not the same as butchering an animal. So if someone owns a butcher shop, even if they don't butcher the animals/meats themselves, they are still selling butchered meat and therefore can be defined as a "butcher"(though in practice they generally wouldn't be). Vegan meat, however, has nothing to do with butchering and it's silly to use that word to refer to it. I don't know why you're so deadset to argue in defense of a stupid ad campaign but this argument is fucking dumb guy.

I think to anyone with critical thinking skills it's obvious that they are calling it a butcher because its format and style approach deliberately mimmicks that of a traditional butchers shop and not because Sainsbury's are under the illusion that you can butcher vegetables.

No thanks. Vegan meat is just a bunch of highly processed soy products (typically), packed with artificial flavors. I just fail to see the nutritional benefit of eating it over natural meat. Unless someone is swearing off animal products, I just dont see the point in eating it.

The quote I quoted is literally from that same dictionary. Mining does not just have one definition.

When I look up mining I get this:
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/mining
the process or business of working mines
Then it also lists some other definitions:

English Language Learners Definition of mining

: the process or business of digging in mines to obtain minerals, metals, jewels, etc.

Kids Definition of mining

: the process or business of digging in mines to obtain minerals

Not sure why you're focusing on this, though, I provided plenty of other examples that illustrates the point quite well: What something means varies with context, and as new contexts emerge, we tend to re-use familiar language if its applicable. This is no different.

I don't know why you're so deadset to argue that this particular instance of a very common phenomenon is silly but sure

Because it sells. Also it's not the shop that vegetarians really object to is it? It's a bit like saying why emulate hot dogs? Because the actual part they object to is removed.

Because they want the taste. A butcher shop is emulating an experience they find objectionable. It's a stupid gimmick.

I never said otherwise but I don't think they find buying something over a counter objectionable.

Meat substitutes are gross. Calling it a butcher is fucking stupid. Just eat vegetables and sodium laden soy loaves (aka meat-free meat) like a non-obnoxious person.

There are some benefits. There's no cholesterol, tends to be low fat and very low saturated fat, and there's also fiber which 97% of Americans are deficient in. Soy is pretty healthy to boot (in moderation like any of these products should be consumed in).

Oh and it tastes good without needing to eat an animal which is lovely. I used to frequent vegetarian places long before making the switch because that veg meat is so dang tasty. The it tastes good should be reason enough honestly. You shouldn't be eating it every meal, but people shouldn't be eating meat every day let alone as often as they do.

I know people eat meat because they like the taste in spite of the harm it requires. I prefer to eat something that tastes good without that additional exploitation. Nothing is ethical under late capitalism but some things are definitely worse

Plant "meat"? Different "cuts"? Now you're just using words improperly. Vegan meat substitutes are made with soy and stuff. They aren't actually "meat" and they don't have different "cuts". It's more like baking a cake then butchering an animal

Meat doesn't require animal flesh. Coconut meat, nut meat, mincemeat. Milk and butter are also terms that don't require animal products

The butchers do have different cuts. Heck they make legit sausage with casing (Vegan of course)

I think you all would benefit from a trip to a vegan butcher because you seem to not understand the variety of vegan meats and think it's all soy loaves. you've never heard of our Lord and Savior Seitan
