Traditionally, film and TV are shot very differently and look very different, the most obvious factor being the aspect ratio. Typically film uses the cinematic 2.39:1 aspect ratio, and TV uses 16:9. The first Avengers film is in 1.85:1 (very close to 16:9) and so looks more like TV. Especially in cinemas it looks worse as a result - the 2.39:1 ratio is better suited for cinemas and 16:9 is better suited for small screens. Age of Ultron used 2.39:1 and looks much better than the first.

I interpret it as having a less polished approach to cinematography, direction of photography, and general mise-en-scne. Nowadays it's not uncommon for TV series to be more conscious of these elements, and there are a lot of television shows that are absolute visual masterpieces, but traditionally, their camerawork and presentation tended to be dull and formulaic while the visual delight was reserved for the big screen that could showcase a level of detail and expanse that television simply was unable to do.
