The season premiere starts at 8pm eastern on Discovery Channel, and will be re-played (with a bonus fight) Wednesday night on Science Channel. This season is scheduled to be 16 episodes in total, with each episode now being two hours long! Here is the full fight card for tonight's show:



Headlining the card tonight are three EDIT: actually four former champion teams. Lock-Jaw is the most recent bot from Team Mutant Robots, former champions from the original BattleBots series with Disector. Cobalt is a new bot from Team Carbide, who has won robot combat championships in China's This Is Fighting Robots (with Tungsten) and in the UK Robot Wars (with their namesake Carbide) and is now going for the triple crown in BattleBots. Last but not least, the champions of the 2016 BattleBots tournament, the mighty Tombstone returns to action after a shocking early exit last year. EDIT: I forgot one. The team behind Quantum also won a King Of Bots tournament in China with a similar vertical crusher bot named Spectre.

My guesses for the winners: Tombstone, Sawblaze, dunno, Kraken(assuming it'll be a protracted fight that goes to the judges), Endgame, if Valkyrie can operate 'upside down' then I give them a slight edge, I assume it'll go to the judges and likely for Blacksmith.

Because it's essentially a sport at this point. Plus there's tons of safety issues.

There are weapons and modifications that are illegal for either competitive reasons or safety reasons, and there are also rules like "you can't hold a robot in place and prevent it from moving for more than 10 seconds" to prevent boring fights.

THEY TOOK OUT THE FUCKING LIGHTS!! End Game and Death Roll just destroyed half of the arena, including themselves and a light fixture on the roof! After being ragdolled around the arena for a solid minute, Death Roll survives and comes out on top.

Hypershock went full berserker, and the classic "breaking the fist with your face" tactic paid off for it as they defeat Valkyrie. Next up is the reliable hammer of Blacksmith vs. the shiny new vertical crusher of Quantum.

Looked like it. Quantum's crusher went so deep into Blacksmith that it couldn't get out. That was the most powerful and efficient vertical crusher that I've seen since the glory days of Razer back in the original Robot Wars.

They got stuck once, took them back to the pits, separated them (it took hours to get them unstuck) and restarted the right, but then they just got stuck again. That's when they called it and decided to go to the judges.

All it took was one solid hit for Tombstone to rip two wheels off of Lock-Jaw and end the fight. What an explosive way to start the season!

I do want to ask you guys something before we call it a night: Should we try to keep this topic bumped constantly and keep it as a running general topic? Or is it not worth fighting against the purge monster and we'd be better off just making a new topic for each episode? If we go with a new topic each week, I'll mention as many people that posted in it the previous week as I possibly can.

Well, I guess that's why I usually don't bother with doing brackets. XD

That fight between End Game and Death Roll was brutal. I know in past seasons there was a bet if Bronco could launch a whole bot that high, but this season pieces at least were launched high enough to deal damage. A Killing Blow is a Killing Blow though, and can swing fights in an instant.

About Cobalt, that thing is designed to rip and tear. It reminds me of shark teeth, offset rows that leave widening gouges.

Quantum definitely looks to be the best crusher I've seen.

Deep Six I have to say seems too unstable of a design to me. It's not going to have any balance in a real fight. It's basically scary until it sustains its first hit, IMO.

Also relating to that, what the [bleep] is Mammoth going to do? It looks like part of a crane assembly.

@Calwings From what I remember, the purge monster is strong on CE. Given the specialized interest in the topic, it's going to require a lot of bumping for the sake of bumping to keep that beast at bay. So it might be best to prepare 'fight night' topics.

Agreed on both counts. Cobalt looks like it could be just as much of a destroyer as its sister bots, Carbide and Tungsten, and Quantum is the closest thing we've ever had to being a true successor to the legendary Razer. They're both bots to watch going forward.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the weekly topics as well. What I'm thinking I might do is make the weekly topics on Wednesday night, so the people who have to catch the Science Channel re-runs of the episodes can still share their opinions on the episode when they're fresh on their minds, and the people who already watched the previous Friday on Discovery can give their thoughts on the Science exclusive bonus fight.

I'd also throw in some gifs from the previous episode in the opening post, then bump it on Friday for the new episode by mentioning everyone interested. If I post it on Wednesday night, it'll likely survive the purge on Friday morning and be ready for the next episode.

Sound like a good plan?

Ribbot has a vertical spinning disc on the front, and it actually bent one of Kraken's teeth up pretty badly.

Someone on Kraken's team was also a bit cheeky with some late flames after the match ended, trying to fry up some frog legs.

I don't think they were penalized for it though since, as mentioned during the episode, the foam frog body was purely cosmetic and didn't affect the bot in any way.
