Place 06/14/19 11:54:22 PM #24:	Shovel Knight Cave Story Stanley was the game that made me want to make games, but Shovel Knight showed me how it's done. The base game is as close to perfect as its genre comes, (though there are two other platformers in the bracket that more than stand toe-to-toe with it) and the expansions are a welcome change of pace. I still love Stanley too, and I'll never forget its influence on my creative process, but it is a bit hard to revisit as of late. Its self-aware storytelling, something novel at its release, has been beaten to a pulp by writers who think they're breaking new ground every time pencil hits the page. Still gonna jam to Ultra Deluxe when it finally drops. Pyre is at a serious disadvantage, being a much newer game with little public attention. Supergiant's worlds are all just insanely gorgeous, exploding with detail and personality and--geez it can be a lot to take in sometimes. Cave Story, though. The world knew Cave Story in 2004, long before the 'template' for indie games had been set. Its influence can't be understated. --- Hi.
