For a long time, I thought America was perhaps the only top-tier country in the world: rich, very large, lots of interesting people, plenty of variety, English speaking, democratic, and with a powerful military. In the present, though, America has certainly slipped. To be fair, it still has all those qualities I mentioned, but Trump and more to the point Trump voters, have cast a pall over things. Still a great country, but not top-tier. Furthermore, I can't think of any country that I would consider top-tier. Plenty of impressive European nations, to say nothing of Canada, Oz, and so on, but there all have something that lacks.

Switzerland seems like a very good country, but it's meant to be expensive, and it's pretty cool and wet.
