Like on the SNES era of Final Fantasy I'm not a big fan of IV or V. I think VI is a very good game, but not in the conversation of best game on the console or anything. As far as the fanbase goes (and rpg fandom etc). I'd say it's the most overrated despite probably being a borderline top 3 game in the franchise (behind VII and X, i'd put XIII pretty close when you take into account its two sequels, I think XIII's strengths are VI's weaknesses and vice-versa).

I mean I consider IV to be a "good game", but man the characters fucking dumb a lot of the time. If you think FFVIII is a soap opera, my god, play FFIV. As for V. I don't know it just seems like a "nothing game"? Like no one really talks about it in a positive or negative light (likely because like me it didn't really leave much of an impression).

Oh, it's always had its dissenters, but the idea that FFIX was a reaction to the opposite extreme because Square viewed FFVIII as a failure isn't true though.

Its been a cool thing on this board for a long time actually. It used to be the non-linearity of the WoR that was the cool thing to shit all over VI for.

Probably VIII. Weak cast, storyline is only okay, GF's are overpowered, and if you want a strong team you have to spend hours drawing magic from enemies. And the card game, which is VITAL to getting good items, wasn't my cup of tea. Oh, yeah, and one last thing that bugs me... you can't take your sweet time with this game, or else you end up getting very little money. Argh.

I mean you can criticize the game for making it easy for players to fall into bad habits for various reasons

but if you're someone who likes being powerful and grinding and breaking the game FFVIII makes it as easy as pretty much any JRPG ever

Can someone explain why hating on FF6 is cool?

I feel like way too many modern games follow the same formula that younger players may prefer:

1. Follow the Icon on the map
2. Once you reach X marks the spot:
3. Spam the happy button (attack)
4. Your artificial intelligence companions play the game for you
5. Repeat steps 1-4 for infinite meaningless fetch quests
6. The company will make you pay extra in order to see the whole story
7. At least the graphics are hyper realistic?

I was a bit overwhelmed with all of the card options in VIII, but I still really enjoyed it

I was too afraid to convert any of my cards into items because I liked winning the card games

VI, simply because of how near universally loved it is. Like a lot of people said, it would be the correct option even if VII was included. Not that I think VII is overrated or anything because it is only my favorite game of all time.

VI is a game with highlights but usually it's just not a very exciting game.

That said, IX can be extremely dull at times, and the minigames, oh God... the minigames...

X by a long shot. It's basically the FF7 of the PS2, in that it's the first FF on a new system, with all the graphics and bells and whistles, coming off the success of the PS1 era. It's got a garbage story, which is antithetical to what a JRPG should be going for.
