BattleBots is back on TV with a brand new season of metal munching mayhem! Week 4 of this 16-week season airs tonight at 8PM Eastern on the Discovery Channel and will be re-run next Wednesday on the Science Channel with an additional bonus fight. Here's the fight card for this week:



The deadliest bot in the game, Tombstone, is back in action for its second main-event fight of the season as it takes on the durable and determined Sawblaze! Also this week, the seemingly impenetrable armor of Duck and the seemingly unstoppable crushing jaws of Quantum are facing tough new tests, as Duck takes on the dominant British spinner Cobalt, while Quantum faces off with the longtime veteran Lock-Jaw. If you missed last week's episode and its re-run, it's available to watch online through the Science Channel's website, though you may need to log in with a cable provider or possibly use a VPN if it's not available in your country. Trust me, it was one hell of a show!

Somehow, someway, Duck's strategy of "breaking the fist by ramming it with your face" prevailed yet again. It just goes to show that even if that face is busted and bloodied and bruised, even if the nose is ripped clean off that face... as long as it's still breathing, it has a chance.

Rotator got a dominant win, knocking Bombshell out of that fight and likely (barring any bullshit like the Desperado Tournament or the Last Chance Rumble) out of postseason contention. Next up is a battle of (what looks like) two jokebots, Rainbow vs. Nelly The Ellybot. Random side note: the team captain of Nelly The Ellybot is the page owner of the infamous "Robot Wars Shuntposting" Facebook fan group.

I'll have to see another fight from Rainbow before I can throw it into the "lethal joke bot" category with HUGE, but that weapon definitely did the job. Quantum vs. Lock-Jaw is up next! Will we have another controversy like Quantum's last fight against Blacksmith? Or something more clear-cut?

The best way to beat a vertical crusher? Never. Get. Caught. Excellent driving by Donald Hudson leads Lock-Jaw to what some might call an upset over Quantum. The "second coming of Razer" may have hit a snag, but I'm sure Quantum will come back with a vengeance in their next fight.

Definitely. Kraken absolutely won control, and Blacksmith absolutely won aggression. It all boiled down to who won damage, which two of the judges gave to Blacksmith. I'm fine with the decision, and I agree with Chris and Kenny that it could have gone either way.

Yeah, I think every judge was able to make their case. Nothing too controversial there. I think the Blacksmith crew needed the win more for morale, the Kraken team took the loss well.

Now THAT was an upset. I expected Ribbot to get eviscerated, but it survived, ripped the drive chain out of End Game, and pulled off a victory! And speaking of potential upsets, our main event is up next! Can Sawblaze make their mark and defeat the mighty Tombstone?

No upset this time. Sawblaze put up a fight and took some brutal shots in the process, but as many bots have learned before, Tombstone was just too powerful. If that ends up being Sawblaze's only loss of the regular season, I think they end up firmly in the top 16 and make the postseason.

Sawblaze is definitely capable of getting there. He's an excellent driver, tho I've never been to impressed by the saw.

I'll have to catch the episode on DVR this week.

Looking at the fight card though... Nelly the Ellybot? Versus Rainbow? A goofy hammer bot versus a bar spinner that is flat? I mean, at this point the episode already aired so I could be wrong, but that fight card looks like a comedy intermission in the making.

There were some good fights, a couple surprising outcomes

Really enjoyed a fair few of the fights this week. Drew my interests far more than last week, which had like 1 or 2, but overall left me in a feeling of eh for various reasons.

Was thrown off and confused to see the fightcard already going into return bots, but I guess that's just how they wanted to air/edit em.

I did spot the youtuber mystrsyko though in the bottom left of a crowd shot. Can't remember which fight now, maybe blacksmith and kraken... That or quantum/lockjaw.

I'm glad the duck fight went the way it did, also just shows how darn terrifying cobalt's design is as it's basically a mobile floor hazard.

Just finished watching.

I only had one prediction this week and it was wrong. I thought End Game would win.

I was fairly sure Tombstone would win but Jameson is an excellent driver as well, which gave me pause.

I wanted Duck to win after that bad call last season but every driver should be scared of Cobalt and that nasty spinner.

Hammer bots seem to rarely do much damage. Still glad that Blacksmith won it's fight and that Quantum lost it's fight. I didn't care for the decision of their fight against each other last week (or the week before?).

There's 16 episodes, and every bot (that actually might have a chance to make the tournament) needs to have at least 4 fights before the tournament starts. Plus they have to devote one episode to the mid-season Desperado Tournament.

Agreed. Both bots looked great because they both accomplished what they set out to accomplish (Cobalt did tons of damage and Duck survived) and I think Cobalt will barely suffer at all from the loss when it comes to the selection committee. It could lose one more fight for real, but have a great chance to still make the tournament at 2-2. Or it could go 3-1 but end up seeded higher than an undefeated bot who had an easier schedule.

Is it confirmed it's only 16 total? If so I'm both a bit relieved and disappointed. Nevermind, just saw it myself. :( Sad as that means fights will most likely be cut, but on the plus side it should be concluded a bit sooner.

Yes, it's confirmed 16 episodes. We're still getting more total fights overall than last season due to the episodes being 2 hours, plus we get the extra interviews and tech demonstrations back in the pits. I know some fans just want more action, but I like the extra fluff between the battles as well.

I guess I did the math wrong and might just be how it's put together. I don't mind the bonus fluff so to speak, but it does seem like less fights for some reason. I'll wait til it's done before I rain the hate, because one gripe I had about last year was it dragging on forever and then the last episode is 4 fights including a bonus exhibition.

Also fun fact, I opened the calculator on my pc after not using it for a bit and it was practically full screen. I have never been so startled by a calculator on a computer.

Ray Billings has better buy a wreath for the pulverizer or something. Sawblaze probably wouldn't have finished him off up against the wall, but all it takes is one chain hit and Tombstone is a complete potato. That little bit of space changed everything. Great fight.

Lots of good spinners this year, I can't wait for a good vertical vs. horizontal spinner impact that sticks shrapnel into the battlebox walls.

Also, thanks for tagging me. I can't watch these live and last week I didn't see the episode until like Sunday so I forgot to post. Love me some robot fighting, though.

Now keep this in mind: Cobalt, the bot that absolutely ripped Duck to shreds tonight on BattleBots, is from the same team that made Carbide. So in this current generation of robot combat, that team has built one of the best vertical spinners in the US and the best horizontal spinner in the UK.

We've seen that kind of fight before, where he essentially becomes a push-bot. More often than not though his opponent is also in a varying degree of disabled, making the fights go to the judges.
