It's not a traditional loot system from what I've seen and played. The items that drop are called Isotope-8 which basically enhances and changes the attributes of the character. One Isotope-8 may add an electrical effect to attacks once the HP gauge dips below a certain threshold. Stuff like that. You can also break down weaker Isotope-8 to make stronger ones. The mission I played was on the rooftops of New York City. There were open spaces littered with enemies but also corridors with alarm systems you had to watch out for as an example. I do think the game itself will spice things up a bit. You can pick up debris and throw it at the enemy. Not sure about a battle mode but there is a mode called Infinity Trials. I think it operates similar to what you're thinking. Missions are styled as "Defeat 200 enemies that come in waves" or "Take down Kingpin, Ronan, and Juggernaut". Not sure if there will be a VS. mode.
