I never watched it. Is it still a really good movie, or do you have to "take yourself back to the time when they filmed the movie" to appreciate it (like Citizen Kane, 12 Angry Men, Planet of the Apes, 2001 A Space Odyssey, etc.; how old movies have overacting, poor pacing, etc.)?

It's easily watchable and enjoyable. All 3 are, if you can accept that the female lead in the 3rd movie is a plainly bad actress.

The first two are Al Pacino at his best.

You don't have to take yourself back in time to when they filmed 12 Angry Men to appreciate it. I watched it last month for the first time ever and I thought it was fantastic. There's a 90s remake of it and it wasn't anywhere near as engaging

lmao @ all of this

These older movies are more like filmed stage plays; the acting is ridiculously over the top and the scenery is mostly static. Like I don't understand how Doctor Strangelove is such a classic; the titular doctor is a comedic, overacting fool.

Godfather Part 1 and Part 2 are both fantastic.

Godfather Part 3 is supposed to be bad (I never saw it), but according to IMDB it's actually pretty good. Just not as good as the first two.

I was trying to generalize all older movie styles. 2001 A Space Odyssey, in my opinion, has very poor pacing and was just an all-around borefest. Nothing interesting happened in the movie, and every action took minutes to happen. Even mundane things like walking and talking on a phone is elaborate and take minutes.

Spoilers for 2001 A Space Odyssey:
Literally the first 10 minutes of the movie is a bunch of people in ape-suits that are grunting and jumping around with obnoxious ape-sounds. Then literally the next 15 minutes is of a flight attendant walking and taking care of a guy sleeping (side note: If this is her job, why the hell is it taking her that freaking long to go to the guy sleeping? She's like stumbling around as if it's her first time in space). Why is this not boring?

I rewatched a lot of clips from Part 3 the other day. Almost everything seems like a cheap TV movie version of a Godfather film. The story, the acting, just the overall vibe. There's some good and interesting parts and ideas, but the execution of the whole movie was wrong.

It's called world building. I'm sorry that Stanley Kubrick thought getting to the shooty bangbang action that has no meaning or importance should take more than five seconds.

I'll grant you the first scene had some plot point, but the second? Spoilers:
First one was intended to show that apes that get near the black bar can jump start their thinking power by developing weapons. Second one built what...? That space travel is so mundane and normal that the passenger is sleeping, yet the flight attendant can't even freakin' walk normally?

I only watch a very small bit of 2001 A Space Odyssey and like Star Trek The Motion picture it is a very slow movie and very boring from what I saw.

World building is important to a story but it can be done in interesting ways like LOTR where you get plenty of "setting the stage" but not boring as fuck bullshit that needs to "move faster".

Even slow building movies like Alien knew how to "keep it moving" while establishing who is who and what the world is like before "shit goes wrong".

it's showing that even if we've advanced here on earth we're still infants in space, hence eating food likening baby food, having to learn to walk with zero gravity, etc.
