It gets bagged on (hehe) a lot for some reason for being a pokemon based on trash. I guess inanimate objects are somehow invalid, even though Muk and Magnemite and Voltorb were all things ever since Gen 1. If anything Trubbish is incredibly faithful to what can ultimately become a Pokemon.

However, let's just look at him

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/500522734523252738/599735393943814147/PokecordSpawn.jpg

You got yourself a cute Pikachu-esque looking pair of ears that are derived from a knot that one would tie on a full trash bag. You got his mouth, which is like a broken glass that protrudes out of the bag but in the shape of a mouth with outwardly showing razor teeth. You also got his arms that are basically spilling trash, the unevenness sorta implying clumsiness.

You really got like the cutest best Pokemon you can make out of a concept like an overfilled trash bag. It's also got like the general peach shape that slime-like creatures in media tends to prefer. Slime from Dragon Quest, the blob baby versions of Digimon, they all take that shape for overall appeal.

Really underrated, maybe criminally so, when imo it's one of the most creative Pokemon to come out in ages, even now

I will never get the "the designs are so uninventive these days" argument, like the gen 1 designs weren't the most basic shit ever.

Agreed, Trubbish is great. Pokemon would be lamer without the grosser concepts mixed in with the cuddly stuff like foxes.

I never got the hate for it or the ice cream pokemon (which iirc, it's just ice with snow in top of it, lol)

Like it's called pocket monsters, not pocket animals. Lol

Voltorb's a great design because it's an in-universe mimic for the games. Just like Foongus or whatever its name was from Gen 5.

Yeah tbh I don't like Druddigon much either. Seems it's based on some obscure lizard. Gameplay wise I think it does do stuff other Dragon types don't... sorta. I mean not really, but it's better in Trick Room for sure

Yep. I'll take something unique but convoluted like Chandelure over a pile of goop that evolves into a bigger pile of goop, a living Pokeball that gets angrier and turns upside down when it evolves, and just a literal seal that they couldn't even think of a name for so they just named it Seel. Tthe point is: all gens had some bad and some good, and no gen as a whole is objectively better than any of the others in terms of Pokemon designs.

I've heard a lot of different things lol. Nothing on the Pokedex or its moveset or typing suggest it's supposed to be based on gargoyles.

In any case, it's badly designed because it's not obvious what it's going for

*ahem*

"It warms its body by absorbing sunlight with its wings. When its body temperature falls, it can no longer move."
"It races through narrow caves, using its sharp claws to catch prey. The skin on its face is harder than a rock."
"It infiltrates tunnels that Pokmon like Diglett and Dugtrio have dug and quietly waits for prey to pass through."

It can't move when the temperature falls (implied to be at night), it's skin is harder than rock, and it hunts prey by holding still. Not to mention it's appearance. What do you want, a Dex entry stating it hides in cathedrals?

EDIT: Oh hey, and I just found out that in it's debut games, it was found IN A TOWER.

I've always loved Garbodor's expression. It's like it's wondering why it exists. Meta(in a perfect world, humanity would manage trash and pollution well enough that Trubbish, Garbodor, Grimer, and Muk wouldn't exist!)
And now that I've brought up Grimer and Muk, I feel the need to give a shout-out to Alolan Grimer and Muk. Excellent designs, great twist, and they made a previously useless pokemon relevant.

A gargoyle's usual place would be in a cathedral of a kind, not in narrow caves and tunnels. But the latest Pokedex entry and such only suggests the red parts of the bodies are able to be hardened, which doesn't seem consistent with the gargoyle theme. Maybe it's a mix of both, but honestly, this overall existence to me doesn't scream gargoyle
