You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

Actually, I kinda take it back.

You could call it "the villain" of the movie and everyone would know what you mean

But i wouldn't call it "a villain" in general, because the non-fiction definition of villain involves intent

It can definitely be an antagonist.

I'll say yes it can be a villain in the absolute loosest sense of the word.

Does malicious artificial intelligences count? Like a computer programmed to do something that causes harm that it technically isn't "choosing" to do of its own free will?

Technically nobody has free will because all of our actions are just butterfly effects of genetics and how we were raised.

If me wanting to eat chicken legs in hoisin sauce doesnt fit the normal definition of free will, then that definition is useless to me.

Can something without free will be a hero?

Yes.

Dark Nation is a hero, defending his master Rufus against the vicious enforcer of an eco-terrorist organization.

What makes you think Dark Nation doesn't have free will?! He's choosing to be the bestest boy and protect Rufus! He coulda ran off if he wanted!

This is one of those things that may be true, but we kinda have to pretend isn't in order for society to function at all

Did Lavos have free will

I think some of the dialogue between fight transitions suggests it is aware of what it's doing, but still might be necessary to complete the base life goal of surviving and reproducing.

Eh I never got this.

Who cares if you have no free will? We still need to lock the people up that demonstrably don't follow laws.
