A coworker of mine recommended just not paying them. He said they don't report on your credit, so it won't hurt it. Don't pay them? It'll go on your credit report. Edit - late payments show up on your credit reports too, so choosing not to pay will definitely show up. They can either set up a payment plan, possibly with zero interest, or they might forgive part or all of what you owe. I had a $1000 deductible when I went to the ER a few years back. While it may not cause your score to drop too much (although, it may) it will still make it more difficult to get loans, or in some cases can hinder you if youre trying to rent a house/apartment.
