Whiskey. I enjoy all varieties, but I'm partial to Canadian whiskey and bourbon.

My longtime favorites are Crown Royal, Old Bardstown and Basil Hayden's. Recently, I've also been enjoying Pendleton and different varieties of Old Forester.

Gin is my typical go to.

I knew we vibed well. Gin is probably my favorite cocktail mixer. And the taste is so great if you actually decide to get a quality gin.

Does this even exist in Korea?

Koreans mostly drink Soju, rice wine, or their cheap beer like drinks that technically don't qualify as beer, but there is all kinds of liquor and craft beer, it's just more expensive than in the US typically. Whereas Soju is like $1-2 a bottle, and their "beer" is also, you'll almost always pay more for imported liquor or craft beer than typical in the US. I have seen cheap local craft beer often but not local gin or anything.

Depends on the agave used. Tequila uses blue agave which takes 7 years to mature. But mezcal can use any agave, so some use wild varietals that take even longer to mature (like 15 years) and aren't even farmed. A bottle of Vida may only run $30, but nicer mezcals start getting very pricey.

The combination of the growing popularity of mezcal and the fact that agave harvests are unlikely to keep up also mean it will get more expensive.

When I was like 25 I thought whiskey, scotch particularly, would become my nice drink of choice. But as I've expanded my palette, it's just become way too harsh of a flavor. I'm basically torn between Mezcal and gin, with vodka being a dark horse candidate as it never seems to make me hungover.

I mean, which Scotches have you tried? There's a pretty good variety there and not all of it is harsh.

Also, have you tried adding a splash of water to your Scotch?

Glenlivet Master's something-or-other. I don't know how common it is (Glenlivet is everywhere, not sure about the variety), but it was a tremendously smooth Scotch whiskey. I had it on a cruise, haven't seen it since.

How is vodka great for cocktails? It's designed to be as neutral as possible, so there's barely any flavor there aside from the taste of ethanol.

It's fine for infusions, but you can infuse any spirit and play off the flavors already present.

I guess that's what I meant. I typically see vodka infused with a lot of unique and interesting things, probably because it's safer for mixologists to mess around with. I did have a nice Earl grey Infused gin tonight though that served as the impetus for this topic.

I used to be a whiskey man, but in all honesty vodka tastes less & better, and can blend more seamlessly into other drinks.

I used to care about whiskey putting hair on my chest, but I'm not so worried about that anymore.

Maybe I just haven't had the really good stuff, but at lower price points it's hard to beat some belvedere mixed with whatever.

Wouldn't have really had an answer until last year when a friend started bringing bottles of her local Nicaraguan rums to our get togethers. I've also tried Ron Zacapa from my gf's Guatemala, which felt like discovering an unknown gem. Rum's the winner for me.

Also, while this isn't my favorite, anyone interested in trying exotic liquors should consider Arak, a drink popular in the Middle East but virtually unheard of in the U.S. You mix it with ice water to dilute (most brands are 50% ABV); this also changes its color from clear to pale white, which serves as a nice parlor trick for people unfamiliar with the drink. Disclaimer: imo it tastes just like black licorice which is kinda gross but all the 50+ year old men in my family love it.

Rum is the only one of these that I just cannot enjoy. Obviously flavored rum in some fruity drink will work, but actual good rum with that rum taste just isn't for me. It may or may not have to do with giving myself alcohol poisoning from high ABV rum in high school though *shrugs*

Scotch and tequila are my favorites.

I dont really do mixed drinks I just sip, neat. Maybe an ice cube every now and then for something of a higher than standard abv (say 50% or higher).

For tequila most people sip reposadas or Anejo but I prefer sipping a blanco. Theyre all good though! The only mixed drink I really make are margaritas with fresh squeezed lime juice and agave nectar.

Also a shot of tequila blanco with a lime wedge is one of my favorite things.

Scotch single malts are generally what I buy. Highlands most of the time. We went to Scotland and stopped by a scotch distillery in the highlands a couple of years ago so that was really cool to experience as a scotch fan. The further you go in the worse and worse it smells, its crazy that the outcome tastes so good.

And rum, that shits the worst

Try an agricole rum if you haven't. Completely different flavor since it's made from sugarcane juice rather than molasses. It's more grassy/herbal.

Whiskey has always been my favorite by itself, but I've been getting into gin lately and it really is amazing in mixed drinks. At the other end of the scale, I've never really liked anything with rum much (though I'll admit I've never tried any "good" rums). Tequila/brandy/vodka are decent, but none of them have ever really grabbed my interest much.
