The ad released in January was a short film titled "We Believe" which took on the topics of #MeToo and toxic masculinity. The campaign was criticized by some for over generalizing male behavior and being corporate "virtue signaling."

P&G's claims contradict statements made this week by Gillette CEO Gary Coombe who told Marketing Week the #MeToo ad campaign had cost the company money but was a "price worth paying."

On Tuesday, P&G announced the company had taken a $5 billion loss for the quarter with Gillette, costing the company $8 billion in a noncash writedown.

It was a weird ad. I think they were trying to target woman because Dollar shave club is eating their lunch and less people are shaving now a days. To target woman by knocking down your bigger consumer base was pretty stupid.

Even though i agree with they were trying to say, we dont need corporations telling us how to fucking think.

Also it was rich coming from a company that sells different, more expensive razors to women.

They released a blonde hair blue eye soldier ad soon after. It was kind of comical reaction on their part.

So there I was, putting on my rape shoes, and practicing my sexual harassment pickup lines this morning. I just got done cyberbullying my coworkers. It was time to shave, I yelled at my wife to smile because I demand it, while pinching her butt right after she told me she didn't consent to it. Putting on the shaving cream and thinking about how I can get my son into a fight at the next BBQ, I replaced the worn Gillette brand Mach3 and began to chant "boys will be boys" as I started to shave.

Then suddenly my daughter burst into the bathroom holding her phone. As I began to mansplain to her why she isn't smart enough to know my shaving time is my time she showed me the new Gillette ad. I realized how my every view and behavior I've ever held dear was wrong. I'm calling in sick at the toxic masculinity factory today and registering Democrat. Thanks Gillette, now excuse me while I help to impeach Trump.

This.
I don't think these ads are the cause, but a reaction.

The industry is getting undercut by a constant churn of Harry's clones that seem to exist only long enough to get bought by a monolithic corporation and quickly dismantled. Desperation from eroding market share leads to misguided marketing campaigns attempting to chase an audience that doesn't exist.

The assumed causality is actually the other way around.

On Tuesday, P&G announced the company had taken a $5 billion loss for the quarter with Gillette, costing the company $8 billion in a noncash writedown.

whut.

Not sure...my guess is that it means they didn't actually lose the money it was just they made less than their projected or historical amount. So it's not an expense, just money they didn't earn? Idk

Someone gonna do the due diligence and check their financials for the past year to see if Gillette has lost money in the past?

If GameStop ran this same ad you wouldnt say they went broke due to an ad. They are going broke regardless.

$5 billion loss for p&g in the quarter because they wrote down the value of its goodwill/intangible assets for Gillette by $8 billion. Without that they would've made about $3 billion.
