That said, if it is gang-related (unclear but it probably is), then it has different causes, shooter motivations, and solutions, starting with the War on Drugs and foreign policy. But if we're talking about media coverage, the primary reason why is because gang violence is expected. People expect gangs to exist and commit violent crimes, as they have since before televisions existed. People never expect previously law-abiding citizens to seemingly randomly murder a bunch of their fellow citizens, and the average person has trouble understanding exactly what is going on with mass shootings without being given more information.
