I checked Tazzy's list, and 8 of the top 10 have writeups
somehow the two left w/o writeups are Phoenix and Snake
if anyone wants to do last minute writeups PLEASE send them in to tazzy, it would be great to top this off with the entire top 10 having writeups!

That reminds me, I suppose I should try to get in write-ups for my characters in the top 10.

Ange - As far as resident stoic badass team members goes, it's hard to get much better than Auron. He establishes himself as important from the getgo, the world knows and reveres him, and when he does join the party his words are short but helpful and to the point. Plus that outfit, sword and using a sake jug to fight is ****ing cool.

Ange - This is his story. He may not be referred to his name directly in the game, but you still get to experience the world of Spira with him and see him grow and develop as a person. You may love or hate the laugh scene or his voice/appearance in general, but his role of being relatable as a new person in a big world while still having his own personality is quite memorable.

Mana - Before playing FFX last year, I only knew Tidus as the Meg Ryan blitzball player who has a terrible laugh, but after playing, I was surprised and taken by how well developed the character was and how he matured over the course of the game. He was a great POV character with a very different understanding of the world he's in, not just with geography or history but with understanding the racial issues with the Al Bhed, the curious traditions of the summoner's pilgrimage, and the apathetic fear of Sin. The last parts of the game when he realizes who he is and how he steps up are some of the best story in video games.

Mana - The best protagonist. She has the stubborn idealism that makes Vyse the legend. She has the growth from someone brash and arrogant to noble and empowering like Tidus. She has the duty of Celes as well as her spirit and bonds. She has the can-do helpful teenager with attitude mindset of the best Power Rangers, always fighting the baddest monsters while volunteering her free time to fix streetlights and find lost kittens. Estelle is absolutely incredible and her strength is in her willpower and belief in people. There are plenty of other leads who try for this and oftentimes fall off that narrow edge and become too treacly and perfect or too generic and cardboard. Estelle is not perfect, but she learns, picks herself up, and pushes forward, inspiring the hearts and minds of those around her.

Metalmind - I am a bad Trails fan who has only played roughly halfway through FC to date. Even in that relatively short time, however, Estelle has already etched a place high up among my favorite video game characters. It would have been easy for her almost eternally sunny disposition and airheaded, frank-to-a-fault nature, not to mention personality quirks such as her searing anger when belittled, to grate. That risk is even greater given Estelles role as the main protagonist, so its to Falcoms eternal credit that she instead proves endearing, aided by the contrast with her adopted brother Joshua. Perhaps the best example of their interplay and the depths of their bond comes from a simple scene where the two eat a sandwich together. Estelles coming-of-age story and character growth therein further helps make her a great character. Of course, I cant end this write-up without reminding you that she has a very big stick.

7. Kanji Tatsumi
from Persona 4

Ange - A character that's known for both being hilarious but also for breaking stereotypical gender norms a bit before it became a lot more of the in thing to do in current western society. He has his insecurities and both his main plot development and Social Link establish what he goes through in both a funny and heartwarming way. And he accomplishes that while still being a badass that fights with a chair.

Tangy - Is Kanji my favorite Persona character? No, but I will say hes probably the most well written, fully fleshed out character. Hes a character that challenges the very idea of masculinity, while most consider it being all macho and a bit of an ass. Kanji learns to accept his softer side and ends up being more the most considerate member of the investigation team. I also think the topic of sexuality when it comes to Kanji is handled incredibly well. It makes it clear that the stance on sexuality isnt as clean cut and simple as everyone seems to think. The audience isnt 100% sure and you know what neither is Kanji and you know what neither is Kanji, it gives that sense of nuance to characters that you dont get to see very often.

6. Samus Aran

Metalmind - Even though Ive hardly played Samuss games, I very much respect her as a character anyways. In particular, its hard to understate just how mindblowing the twist at the end of the original Metroid was, even as someone who was born over ten years after the fact. Right away, it defined Samus as a badass bounty hunter who just so happens to be female, rather than a woman who happens to be a bounty hunter unusual even today, and positively revolutionary in 1987. That (most of) her later, classic games have stayed entirely true to her characterization as a lone wolf with an unflinching sense of justice who values actions over words is whats allowed Samus herself to go down as a truly classic video game character, rather than merely a groundbreaking one. She also has a certain level of compassion and a protective/nurturing streak, showcased most memorably for me in her interactions with Pikachu in the Subspace Emissary, that further contributes to a multilayered character.

Tangy - Samus is so badass its insane. Im usually not a big fan of silent protags, but the fact that Samus lack of dialogue matches the atmosphere of the Metroid games makes it actually work here. The foreign planets are so eerie and spooky that seeing Samus march on without fear really shows off how courageous she is. This is further expanded on in the Prime games where you can see her face reflecting off the visor. It lets you sense the slightest bit of fear, but she stills overcomes it to do what needs to be done. Also for the record I have never played Other M and I dont intend to. I dont want her character being ruined for me.
