So many professions work long hours. But oh boooo hooo we had to meet deadlines and stare at a screen and do math with machines that calculate for us waaaaaaaaah!!!

That is normal for so many, including people doing important jobs that actually matter beyond some ridiculous entertainment ( I love video games more than I should, but entertainment isn't as important as the stuff Im about to name off)

Doctors, nurses, medical techs, medics, paramedics, soldiers, cops, fire fighters, people in IT working on things that help the world, scientists, truckers, etc.. Oh, except these people dont get crazy breaks in between projects like game devs do.

So quit crying and feeling sorry for game devs. It's pathetic.

It's gross in those examples, and it's still gross with game devs.

Just because other people get exploited doesn't mean they aren't also exploited. That's not how it works.

I mean, if by "crazy breaks" you mean "no employment", I guess this is accurate.

I think the worst part is how often entire teams get fired immediately after completing a project, or in the middle of a project.

other than that, as long as they get paid overtime (which maybe they don't?) I don't think it's that bad, at least for programmers. programming is something that kind of benefits from working continuously without too large of breaks. as long as they're getting paid properly and get appropriate vacation time, I don't see it as that bad an issue.

I guess it's easy to say that as someone without a family though, and I can't really know how bad it really is or isn't without experiencing it first hand.

If you agree to work long hours and do so knowingly and are paid for said long hours and so-forth, IDGAF. If you are effectively forced to do so without it being stated or paid and fired for 'poor teamwork' if you dare to go home and sleep... Yea. Something's wrong and I'm on your side.

Even though I like playing videogames, I sure as hell don't want to make them.

I dont know anything about working in the game industry but if you're working long hours it all depends on payment. If you're working really long hours and getting shit pay then it's not worth it. But I'll gladly work 12 to 14 hour shifts if I'm making 6 figures at least for a while. Nobody should have to live that way permanently though but that's where breaks in between projects would come in I suppose and at least an occasional day off hopefully

Game devs often fight uphill battles against corporate bullshit instead of getting to focus on the art that they want.

Meanwhile, in a not-so-ironic twist, this topic comes out of nowhere crying about people who cry. Hmm...

It's a thing in all corners of the software development industry, the large corporations just have multiple projects going on simultaneously so people can be shifted over to something else once their application goes into maintenance.

Most people simply don't have an appreciation for the level of effort which goes into building stuff because software development is one of those things that is so intimidating that many have never looked into how it is done, they just expect computers to work, that's my belief anyway.

In any case, that's why I've never had any desire to be a game dev. ~14 years as a dev and I have purposely stayed away from it, and not only due to the fact that those companies pay less than half industry standard.

If it helps, I have a full time real job and a family w/ kids and make games in my spare time when I can. I do almost everything myself for $0 budget mostly because I find it to be both fun and challenging. But I won't go out of my way to whine all about it, push a game through early access to soak the players, or demand money via Kickstarter when I can just do it myself.

Kind of an odd topic to start up, sounds personal.

Speaking as a Software Developer (but not a Game Developer), one of the biggest problems studios have nowadays is bad project management. If anything, Kickstarter makes it even worse especially when you are asking for money for a game to be released in a year, and include tons and tons of stretch goals to try and entice people to give you more money. That just screams not thinking about how much time and effort goes into making a game. You can't just throw more money at a problem and think everything will work out because there are numerous things that money can't solve in a software project. If a company is forcing it's employees to work more then 40 hours a week, then management isn't doing their job properly. They either underestimated the amount of time something would take or overestimated the abilities of their team members.
